Is it really not that good or are we just jaded by Disney constantly milking it?

The fuck are you talking about? Only idiots and contrarians will try and say it wasnt great. I personally dont even like it that much anymore but I can still recognize its greatness
>>
The first two thirds are great, it stumbles in act three a bit, but has a strong ending.
>>
It was great
>>
It may be very flawed but I still consider it one of the greatest in 2DCG animation

Lion King is the height of the second Golden Age of Disney.

I feel it's the only Disney Movie that had perfect editing. Not a single "Can we get this over with" moment.

I lived in a college town as a child when it came out and I remember a line stretching outside the theater of college kids wanting to see TLK. It was really the first Disney movie to gain "mainstream" recognition.

If Disney wants to milk it, they should release the unaltered version released back in 1991 with a digital-to-digital transfer.
I hate it that we can only see the 2004 or 2012 IMAX Special Edition re-edits and not the original versions, the "original version" included on both the DVDs and Blu-ray are in fact, the IMAX Special Editions with the theatrical version of the "Morning Report" scene without the song.
At least their edits aren't as absurd as George Lucas' edits to the Star Wars Original Trilogy.
The true unaltered version deserved to be released in high quality.
Unfortunately, unlike Star Wars, no preservation is currently in circulation.

I rewatched it again recently after so many years (10+ years?)

I was actually surprised it wasn't as great as I remember it to be. Mufasa's death is still a really great scene though.

Its pretty great, but having grown and realized its just Hamlet with lions does sour my opinion a bit.
>>
The first Lion King was fucking fantastic OP and I'm pretty sure most of /co/ agrees, what are you talking about?

I even remember the second one being kinda good (I don't really remember) but anything after that was terrible shameless milking

See, I heard people saying that, and then I actually read Hamlet and realized that they're really, really different.

They released a version 3 years before the theatrical release?

Yeah in the same way Lion King two is really really different from Romeo and Juliet.
