After Yugo goes full God Emperor mode with the six dofus fighting Ogrest in the OVAs, many unaligned humans down on the world of 12 witnessed his power and began to worship him as a new god. They became the Eliotropes (with an O), human followers of the original space-faring Eliatropes, but more specifically Yugo. This was originally done so that players of the wakfu games had a way to use something in-game that had Eliatrope-like powers, without fucking up the lore of the story (adding onto it instead).

Since no god cared to do anything, the people had to endure it until a new protector (Jiva) appeared. And so, many people decided to follow the small goddess of masochism, Sacrier, who took their pain and transformed it into energy. Enough people followed her to get access to Inglorium and the world became the World of Eleven.
Then some centuries later Pandawa brought booze and it became teh World of Twelve.
Something that caught my curiosity while reading Sacrier's story is that it happened in the year 11, while Goultard was born in -1111. Either Katar was a follower of Sacrier when she still was a very weak goddess, or Goultard didn't fall in love and get kids until he was around 1000 years old.

As far as I remember, the official story is that Yugo's anger after being called "King of nothing" made him desire for followers when he used the Dofus, which spawned many followers across different times.
The reason why there doesn't appear to be any eliotrope in the Wakfu show and everyone was amazed by Yugo's powers hasn't been told yet, although Tot said he still has plans for Eliotropes in the mmo.
The book says that traces of an eliotrop are erased from people's memories after his death, so it's been theorized that all eliotropes disappeared in sometime between the eliotrope's arrival to the Wakfu era and Yugo awakening his powers (which is 12 years after the Wakfu MMO, unless that's been retconned)

Tough call. Wakfu is Ankama's first and it can really show in the starting episodes, which put some people off watching more. Once it does get into a groove, it's considered the best series, adventure-wise.
Dofus is more recent, laid back and episodic. Not everybody's cuppa but still fun.

I think the story is quite good and more than holds its own. The order doesn't matter too much, Dofus is set before Wakfu but they're like they're own universes and you won't miss much starting one instead of the other.
Wakfu does start off pretty slow though and it isn't until theor after the, depending on your tasteBoufbowl episodes where most say it picks up. It's a trip to get there but once you do it's a damn fun ride to the end of the season.
