Honestly, I'm not hugely convinced that Raven is evil, at least in the conventional sense. It strikes me that she probably found out about the grand events surrounding Ozpin vs Salem and said 'Fuck off, I'm not having part of any of this shit.' and just walked away from everything, and wound up investigating Grimm shit on her own.
It would also mesh with her edgy design for her to have deviated from both the established good guys and the bad guys.

Not necessarily. It has been noted that RWBY's quality, especially the first Volume's, seems to increase when watched in one sitting due to eliminating the short episode issues and wait times.
You need to remember that for people watching back in Volume 1 that the Jaune Arc was an entire month's worth of episodes not focused on the characters that were advertised to be the central characters of the show.
