The Color War has always been a weird story element to me- if individuality and expression are such big themes, shouldn't the main characters be fighting for it?
Blake's not fighting for herself, she's largely informed by her connection with her people, and how she fails or succeeds at helping their plight.
Weiss isn't fighting for herself, she wants to uphold a legacy in the form of the SDC.
Ruby isn't fighting for herself, maybe she was before the show, but now much of her characterization hinges on her friends and teammates.
Only Yang seems to really care about individuality in a way we can see through her actions. She's thoughtless and makes bad decisions based off of pure emotion. Exactly what Vale says it wants.
