The RT scores are a sad indication of the damage Marvel films have done to to the way we culturally perceive superheroes. Critics see something as grand in its ambitions, scope and philosophical scale, and are reviewing it based on how good a Marvel quip-em-up family film it is instead of how good a drama it is.

The bad reviews are happening for one reason, and one reason only. Film critics who have been conditioned to not take comic book movies seriously by Marvel's outings are seeing this film fail to be a Marvel film and lambasting it under the false assumption that's what it's trying to be and failing to give it a chance as a film that uses pop culture icons to explore questions about human nature.

/co/ can laugh it up now over RT scores. Marvel fans tend to live in the moment, the now, and give little concern to the implications of the things they indulge in. Mark my words, in ten years time this film will be remembered as one of the most critically misunderstood films of the decade, and it's reassessments will be marked by regret over how little its direction was understood.

>Reports stating that Lex Luthor's most villainous deed is peeing in someones drink

What a deep and thought provoking film!
>>
OP, phrases like "philosophical political drama" and "exploring mankind's need for hope" and "exploring the dangers of absolute power" are completely meaningless.

Every story dealing with Superman can be said to be those things. The fact that it "explores" them doesn't mean it explores them well, or in an interesting way, or in any meaningful way.

The Smurfs explores agrarian communism, y'know? Doesn't mean it provides insights or a new or interesting take on the subject.
>>

>>81018233

>Damage Control: The Thread
Countless other movies can tell a philosophical drama that is enjoyable that is rated well. When Snyder does it though, there is a condpiracy and/or a problem with the system when it is reviewed badly. There is no way it is just a bad movie made by a talentless hack. No sir, no way!
Christ, get off of the manlet's dick already. It's going to be amazing how many people continue to defend him after WB boots him, and the new director's first DC movie is certified fresh.
>>
>>81018735
I watched MoS and that's why I'm not watching this. So good call, I guess.
>>
>>81018726
>And there's nothing wrong with that.
There is when "turn your brain off" capeflicks become the norm. People like you are the reason why we can only have animation aimed at children. Cartoons can only be profitable if they are comedies aimed at children, because otherwise no one would care. Same deal here.
>>
>>81018726
Okay so then what is it?

What is BvS then? Is it a no-brainer cape flick you need to turn your brain off to enjoy or is it a deep political analysis using two heroes to tell a message? Is it about Batman and Superman with some heroes or does it need to set up the JL movie? Is a movie about these heroes or is it breaking them down? It can't be fucking both. It would just be a clusterfuck, and DC has been going back and forth on what this movie should be perceived as and that hurts it.

I've always held that you have to turn off your brain (and possibly throw it into the nearest bi) to enjoy a Snyder movie. That hasn't changed with these reviews.

>Is it about Batman and Superman with some heroes or does it need to set up the JL movie?
It needs to set up the JL movie. That's the only purpose of the Knightmare sequence you guys were losing your shit over. It wasn't to galvanize Bruce against Clark (Lex does that) it was to go "vagueness is coming get hype for a sequel!)

>>
>>81018496

Here's a good question for you then.

If Marvel poisoned the well like you say, why are Daredevil and Jessica Jones so well regarded?

Days of Future Past reviewed well, and it opens in a dystopian fucking hellscape where most of humanity is dead

Deadpool is full of "quips", but it's also family unfriendly and ruthlessly crass and vulgar by mainstream movie standards

Maybe it has nothing to do with Marvel, or deep themes, or shit like that

Maybe it's just BAD
>>
>>81018210
There is kinda a point to that image. If you are making a serious grim drama, why make it about people that run around dressed in capes and tights like some kind of vampire ballerinas?

A fucking vegetable knew those were going to be trash. Can't credit /co/ for that when EVERYONE knew those movies would be shit.

While the movie is probably bad. Where are these standards when Marvel release a new movie? because deadpool aside they haven't had a good movie in years and yet everyone of their shitty movies get good reviews.

clearly even the positive reviews were paid by marvel to not be as positive about the film.
>>
>>81018600
You only started reading in the last decade, didn't you.

DC used to be the lighthearted kid-friendly universe and Marvel was the grimdark one, but DC's sales have always been worse so they doubled-down on trying to out-Marvel Marvel, while Marvel has shaken the 90's grit by becoming known more for its movies than its comics.

Well that's the thing. People have a hate boner for Snyder and Marvel fags are the Sony fanboys of the comics world.

Insecure as fuck and worried more about hoping for the failure of the "rival company" than enjoying their own shit. Where was all this fuckery when Amazing Spider man was confirmed shit or when Thor 2 failed? Now you see these huge fucking threads citing critcs opinions and the movie isn't even officially out yet so if at the end it goes on to do Transormers money, what will these fags have to say then?
>>
>>81019330
Yeah, good point. Marvel pumps out a solid 5/10 and everyone here shits themselves with excitement.
>>
>Unfortunately, the script’s early promise recedes as the movie unreels. “Batman vs. Superman” is a disorganized, lead-footed movie that carries itself with unearned confidence; you see every card it’s about to play ten minutes before the movie plays it, yet Snyder doesn’t just slap each one down on the table with gusto, he keeps pointing to it and telling you what rank and suit it is. We surely would have surmised that the identical first names of Bruce’s dead biological mother and Jor-El’s adoptive mother—Martha—would come into play eventually, but the film is so worried that somebody might not get it that it has Thomas Wayne croak “Martha” with his dying breath, then finds ways to keep repeating “Martha” over the next two hours, building toward a reprise-flashback of Bruce’s parents’ murder that will bring latecomers up to speed.

Man

This movie sounds so deep

SO deep man
>>
>>81018210
It's a tendency I've noticed, too. And I'm sure it explains why most action films and blockbusters are at most PG-13 only. People don't want depth, drama, scary things or even conflict in their stories; they want films that make then feel safe, that won't stray to far from what is fun and kid-friendly. And /co/ is not the exception; this board is infested with comfyfags, in both /car/ AND /com/ sides of the board.
>>
>>81019398
So what's it like having no self awareness? Oh you probably can't answer that can you..
>>
>>81018487
Only if I meet some dyke who really wants to go to it as a movie date. But unless I meet her tomorrow or something, odds are that she'll have already seen it.

Maybe I'll watch it when it comes out on disc/download. Is funny, I'm liking Ben as Bats and I've HEARD good things about Gail as Wondy, but everything Supes related which seems to be the main point of focus, seems awful to me.

Nice selective memory bro. Amazing Spider-man got a LOT of hate. Especially the Lizard's design and the crane scene.

Thor 2 got a fair amount of hate too. Except
- Even MCU fanboys think the Thor movies are the weak link. There was no vehement defense force to encourage daily threads. (And this is the part you should be paying attention to. If you could just let it go and say "yeah the movie sucked" it'd take the wind out of a whole lot of sales Snyderfags exude so much butthurt that it's impossible to stay away. The schadenfreude is too tempting.)
- It came out at a time of year that was generally pretty slow so nobody cared
- It was after Man of Steel so everyone was stuck in full time MAN OF MURDER memeposting and defending.

DC/WB and Disney/Marvel are both crap factories without any interest on cinema as a narrative medium, even mediocre movies can still follow a narrative but modern Hollywood left the movie business a long time ago in favor of franchises. Marvel films usually don't try for such a grand scale with themes like this and when they do they rightfully get crapped on (see: Age of Ultron).

WB once again commits to my greatest fear. Their undying commital to the "Epic" movie type for all DC movies. Sure The Dark knight was amazing, and Epics have the highest possible revenues, Avatar was an epic. But Epics are also the hardest to make, they are the biggest gambles, and WB has no variety in their movies. I heard their BvS morality rhetoric in Man of Steel and The Dark Knight Rises before that.

If only WB would reconsider their strategy and ask themselves what are customers looking for when they "hire" a super hero movie. That is right out of my marketing textbook.

The "found footage" angle of Chronicle is barely noticeable because the camera is steady 90% of the time.

There's barely any shakycam (I think there's ONE shot of shakycam, but there could be another, I don't remember), no spooky camera angles, no bad lighting or intentionally bad photography.

The reason it's "found footage" is because this idea works perfectly with the personality of the main character.

Everybody go watch Chronicle and see what a good Superman film could be like.

Hard to hear things with your fingers in your ears.
Snyder values style over substance. His cinematograhy is big on spectacle, but devoid of pathos. He thinks in terms of scenes rather than a narrative; he shoots for wallpaper shots and trailers. Stuff that looks cool, but when you try and fit it together the edges push up against each other and the story stops working. Putting aside his cape movies, look at Sucker Punch; he uses the dream sequence motif to hide it there, but that's exactly what he's doing yet again; a bunch of cool looking but ultimately just cool looking stuff, thrown in a blender, and then he comes up with an intellectual sounding justification for it after the fact.

He can't pull good performances out of his actors. Which is a tragedy because he ends up with incredibly charming and talented actors. How is it that Cavill is more charming in The Man from UNCLE than Man of Steel? I KNOW Costner can perform with more warmth than he displays, Field of Dreams alone is evidence of that. This isn't a dialogue issue (although that is not a strong suit of the movie) but an acting one, purely on the shoulders of the director.

Snyder's pacing is also horrendous. Again because his directorial style relies on set pieces rather than plot. He has a big flashy action beat three times a movie, and the rest is a boring slog of psudeo-intellectual soliloquies where characters talk at each other and completely lack any chemistry. Because Snyder doesn't get chemistry. He relies on color and score to impart emotion, not performance.

But whatever. LA LA LA LA LA MARVELDRONE AUTISM, right?
>>
>>81019967
