I think film reviewing is slightly a little bit more (slightly) viable than game review.
Any AAA game, even if it's the biggest piece of shit can be given high reviews across the board because the companies generally pay the sites to advertise them. In order for a AAA game to not get high marks it basically has to shit the bed in every direction (and even that isn't an exact science because the fact that the PC port of Arkham Knight or Assassin's Creed Unity had anything other than 0s is a sin)
However movies get a little more objective because they are high-profile. It's almost the reverse of games. Like for example, let's compare Transformers 4. That, in the game world, would be a AAA game, but that movie has like a 13% on RT. Yes it made a bajillion dollars but it's widely seen as shit. This applies to a lot of other movies too(like say, MoS)where there will be a lot of hype behind a movie but still not get high scores. You think AoU would be so much lower than Avengers' aggregate score in the game world? No way, the reviews would be even higher or at least closer

1) Without reviews, all you have to go by is what the marketing tells you. There has been no shortage of horrible, miserable movies with great marketing. That, or you can just go by the title. God help you then.
2) Not everyone can go to every movie they're interested in. Be it due to financial reasons, logistics, or free time. This means you can't afford to take a lot of risks when going to the movie - you have to do your best to make sure the movie you're gonna pay money and spend time on will be enjoyable.
Just as an example, I was very for FF. Great director, great cast, trailers looked okay, apart from Doom. But then I saw the reviews and I didn't go see the movie. I would've regretted seeing it.
That said, the best way to inform yourself on whether a movie is going to be enjoyable or not, is to find critics you enjoy and whose opinion you usually share.
