TF2 is the most comparable thing to this and it does everything (besides the dated engine) miles better. It's as if the insanity of characters and the world behind the game is coming from the mindless struggles inside an average public server where two teams fight each other over and over again with no results whatsoever.
Winston the Gorilla can be smart and have a touching past but in the end, in an average game, he will aimlessly run around in a bloody clusterfuck in the hands of kids who only care about kills, points and ranks. There's little emotion or sentimentality in multiplayer characters after you've seen hundreds of those clones murdering each other.

I'm also in the Overwatch beta, and I see enough comparisons and influences from TF2 that I don't think it's unfair to make them. One of the biggest things I've seen is that a lot of beta players are surprised to learn that the Payload has a healing effect because the game never explains it. The game never explains it because the Payload mechanics were pretty much lifted from TF2 directly and I guess they assumed that players would already know that.
Plus even if every character isn't a 1:1 duo to a playstyle in TF2, I'm pretty sure the majority of characters were based on building around a TF2 mechanic. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that Bastion was a spin on Wrangler Engineer or that Mei started out as an ironic flip to Pyro.

Most popular and enduring game franchises tend to set standards for future games from that genre. No one would accuse TF2 of ripping off Quake even though a lot of the game's design standards were popularized by that game.
TF2 had a lot of good ideas for the genre. You'd have to arrogant and stupid to not continue the trends they have make common place. TF2 also had a lot of bad ideas like never balancing the game ever under any circumstance, and giving insane game shattering movement skill ceilings to two of the 9 classes so that they became the most dominant in all circumstances and all of the classes become quickly irrelevant the better you become.

actually Reaper was given regenerating nanobots by Mercy, but during his showdown with Solider:76 when Overwatch was disbanded he got exploded. The nanobots regenerated him from dust, creating the ethereal like form he has now.

All the Overwatch characters have tragic background stories. Winston saw his 'father' murdered at the hands of his own people, and potentially had a hand in it because he seemed to have more freedom than most gorillas would.
Tracer probably has some kind of horrible flash moment where she lives out an eternity while everything is frozen in time.
Mei doesn't seem that bad except that she lost all of her friends.
