Steven Universe has far more smears than I thought a modern cartoon would.
>>80947096
ironically, smears seem to be a sign of good animation. so i'm ok with this.
I've never seen a cell of a smear for sale. Why is that?
>>80947187
There's not a lot of them in Star Vs. the Forces of Evil. But I know there's a handful of them throughout, don't have any saved though. Will do some digging, any Anons who can back me up feel free to

Whoever submitted this to theTumblrI found it on should be submitted to the grave.
This one's illustrative AND informative! Isn't animation fascinating, /co/?
Just to keep this thread interesting.
Whoa, even Eddsworld has smears?
Fucking Christ, they really don't make these cartoons like they used to.

Superman TAS had loads, especially in scenes where he's moving really fast.
Proof that smear frames can be done wrong.
>>80947418
>>80947437
It's always pretty cool to see these in 3D.
ok for real this one is fucking slaying me
Here's another Steven Universe smear, this one coming from the very first episode.
>>80947632
ah good old mission hill.
I love the unintentional body horror these tend to create the effect of.

Here's what I like about SU's smears: even out of context they do a great job demonstrating fluidity and motion.

Ironic nothing. They are a good technique.
>>80948779
i know that smears are stylish at best and lazy at worst but that the use of them or lack thereof is in no way indicative of a cartoon's quality
i also know that all of these steven universe smears are the least interesting looking pictures in this thread, but thats neither here nor there

How about some smears purposely crafted for stop-motion?Stuff like this is why Paranorman is the best animated film of 2012 and should've won the Oscar for it instead of fucking Brave.
>>80942504
Ow, my sides
>>80949194
Stop motion, i feel, is true art while CGI isn't. But that's a post modern vs. tradition thing.

are smears lazy?
why cant you just add more frames in?
>>80949476

Huh, they nailed all the anime.
>>80947302
Seems like it was very new at the time. Never seen an episode but people tend to post screencaps quickly when something's new.
>>80945892
these will always be my favorite ones
>>80947375
Yes, you can smear dead people's ashes.
>>80947606
I felt bad throughout that whole movie.
Why the fuck would Tigger set off a mutagenic bomb just for attention? Why did Piglet spill it on Rabbit and then blame Rabbit for making out with his other half? Why did Pooh use it to enhance his honey when Robin specifically showed him the side effects that split his penis in two?
I hope the writers got fired.
>>80947671
It just doesn't seem to work when they do it.

>>80948972
There's really good ones in The Greater Hater. I think they bumped up the usage of smear frames in that episode or another one in S2.

Spears are done to express more motion than would normally fit into the 1/24th of a second.
Some animators do what you say, and work in a higher frame-rate, as a stylistic choice, but it actually can make the animation seem less smooth and more "shakey" if that makes sense.
>>80951751

>>80951667

>>80947510

Smears are fascinating, but they're only one animation trick amongst many.
Animators that want to hide the fact that they can't do a normal head turn or anything remotely difficult will just smear everything.
>>80947495
That wasn't a smear, that was just horribly off model. Smears are only 1 frame, 2 at most.

Nice. I think Cloudy with a chance had a lot of these too.

that episode (which wasn't actually the first episode produced, that would be Laser Light Cannon, though it was the first episode from that specific board team) had some smear frames in the storyboard itself courtesy of storyboard artist Jeff Liu, though that specific one you just posted wasn't one of those

original looks better except for that couple frame long smear to the resting position
its surprisingly fluid without them
>>80969819
I love you
Here's something you can do at home: try pausing a movie while there's some motion going on. Even if the scene isn't particularly action-packed, you might be surprised how hard it is to find a "clean" frame that isn't blurred to all hell.
Most modern films are filmed at 24 FPS, and the chemical process of filming gives it a distinct blur effect that approximates real-life motion "good enough" for our eyes. Animation smears are an attempt to mimic this real-world phenomenon.
>>80956387
Why are they touching her boobs?
>>80970089
It's probably a pretty high frame count to begin with, which makes smears a bit redundant. A smear does what multiple frames of animation usually would with a single image.
>>80970089
The animation is very simple and uses a lot of good principles such as squash-and-stretch, anticipation, follow-through and pacing. The smears are specifically there to assist motion that occurs quickly in 1-2 frames, so it's one of the more subtle (but still important) tricks
>>80952804
Yeah, it was really interesting visually
Not good at all for showing proper motion, but I'd watch a music video like that
>>80949194
Brave is ech. How do people tolerate it?
>>80970830
Because it doesn't have a fandom.
>>80948817
>i know that smears are stylish at best and lazy at worst
You're a goddamn moron.
Smears exist to simulate motion blur and compensate for the fact that some poses should exist for less than one frame's worth of time.
It's not "cheating", it's an important principle of animation.
