The irony is that for decades in the comics Mandarin has basically just been a white guy in a suit who happens to be Chinese.
My biggest problem with IM3 is that the fake Mandarin's persona would have been a really cool revamp of the character, and even the idea that that character was just a cover for the actual businessman Mandarin would have been fine if the actual villain wasn't so awful.
I mean if the kind of racist old version of the Mandarin was the problem, what better way to subvert that than have that racist version just be a cover that he uses to manipulate the public perception, like how Osama bin Laden wasn't really a dirty blood-drinking ALLAHU ACKBAR who lived in a cave, but a maniacal zealot crimelord who moved to different safe houses?
