So will Ratchet & Clank succeed by riding high on the fumes of Kung Fu Panda and Zootopia's success, or is it going to fall victim to the "medium budget CG movie about aliens" curse? Will the two trends cancel each other out, and it will do not spectacular but decent?

The animation looks pretty decent, although it was supposed to come out last year and obviously Zootopia outclasses it heavily in terms of production values and tech. I think it's going to live and die on whether or not the story is good, if gets good word of mouth, and if they are going to ramp up the marketing in April (so far I have only seen posters and floor displays at the theater, and no trailers or commercials).
>>
I haven't really seen much hype for the movie. I keep forgetting about it except when Sony's playstation channel on youtube puts out a new video of the game tie-in/remake.
>>
>No Angela Cross

>>
Kevin Micheal Richardson accidentally got Paul Giamatti's check for re-dubbing Chairman Drek in the movie.

That's messed up.

As long as the tie in game is as good as it looks, the movie can sucks for all I'll care.

Yup. So they could slap a celebrity name of the posters and trailer.

At least they didn't recast Ratchet, Clank, or Qwark.

Gotta have big name stars

James Arnold Taylor is the lead character and yet he's constantly being pushed to the lower half of the main credits
>>
>>80904068
She wasn't in the first game. If this ends up being a franchise they might have her show up in Part 2 like she did in the game, although hopefully they utilize her better. In the games she's that character who got put on a bus and occasionally writes letters.

I guess the writers chickened out on her due to the "Adam and Eve" implications of her and Ratchet being the last two lombaxes. After all, what kind of plucky hero would Ratchet be if his destiny was to repopulate his species with a hot amazonian cat girl rather than just moping about being the last one?
>>
>>80899903
As a casual fan of the series, the movie doesn't look AS funny as I'd like it to look

The trailers for Kung Fu Panda 3 just make me laugh a lot more, even though it's really apparent that the R&C are at least trying really hard.

Definitely 'attractive'

There was an 8 foot tall cardboard stand up for R&C staring me down as I left the IMAX screen playing Zootopia. The marketing has been pretty low key but it exists.

What I'm confused about is where people are seeing the trailer. Apparently everyone got slightly different trailers during Zootopia. Some people saw trailers for R&C and others didn't. I've been to two different chains. Bow Tie didn't have it, and the Imax 3D trailer at Rave didn't have anything but the Jungle Book trailer, but that's probably just Imax. The only other big chains around here are Showcase and AMC and I don't know if I will see Zootopia in theaters again or not.
>>
>>80905286
Well, it at least puts into perspective what celebrities are for in CG movies: marquee value. I'm glad that at least Ratchet and Clank's VAs are the same as the games, though. If this movie is a success then maybe studios won't feel as pressured to stick celebrities in leading roles going forward, which would be nice.

That's not to say there aren't celebrities who do good voice work-- Jack Black is really good in the Kung Fu Panda movies, and Jason Bateman is pretty much irreplaceably great in Zootopia (although Ginnifer Goodwyn is hardly a big name celebrity and she voices the main character, so that's kind of refreshing).
>>
>>80905471
I don't really care about how funny animated movies are anymore, because I'm not really looking for laughs when I go to the theater. They're an added bonus, but I'm more interested in the story and visuals. Does the story have a good emotional arc for its main characters, and is the journey exciting and interesting to look at? Will I experience a wide range of emotions, or are they just going to try and get me with cheap laughs and some empty message about friendship that doesn't feel at all sincere? Most animated movies have at least something that will get a laugh out of me, but I need more than that.
>>
>>80905286
I'm still trying to comprehend how any of those names constituents marquee actors. They're all talented but what's the point of going with celebrities if you don't go A-list?

Eddie Murphy for Mulan
Robin Williams for Aladdin
Dwayne Johnson for Moana
Hell, even Justin Timberlake for Trolls. Those make sense. But Paul Giamatti?

That was PS2 era graphics. We haven't seen an official render of her since then, and I'm sure they'd redesign her if she was going to be in a movie. She's a furbait character so I wouldn't be surprised if they gave her a more hourglass looking figure and thickened up her hips.

I always wondered why they didn't give her a tail, though. The devs retroactively said that female lombaxes don't have tails, but I think tails are cute.
>>
>>80899903
I think it will fail because it was not advertised at all
I saw an ad for it like 2 years ago, and I had no idea it comes out next month
>>
>>80908315
I didn't really see any ads for Kung Fu Panda 3 until it was getting right near the release. Disney tends to start hyping up their movies about a year in advance, although movies with smaller marketing budgets often times wait until about a month before release to start doing any significant promotion.

The movie comes out at the end of April, so there's still time for an effective marketing campaign, but I don't know how seriously Sony and Focus Features are treating the release. They might just see this as a novel way to market the new game, but on the other hand it's possible that they're just waiting until the movie is about to release before spending serious money on marketing.
>>
>>80899903
Unfortunately, I missed out on this series so I dont know personally if that games live up to the reputation, but I think Jak and Daxter would have been better.

Jak & Daxter is doomed to be ignored for the rest of eternity.

The closest it got to a revival was the abandoned "realistic reboot" Naughty Dog was conceptualizing, and then they realized everyone was going to hate it since it wasn't cartoony. The project ultimately turned into The Last Of Us.

I bet they'd skip/gloss over the second game's story and mostly focus on Nefarious for the second movie if one gets made anyway, the Protopet story was weak as fuck.

Yeah Up your Arsenal was kind of weak in terms of the story. They might combine elements of it with another game for the second or third movie, though.

Angela is potentially a very interesting character and it'd be a shame to waste her, either by putting her in an uneventful story that doesn't really put any importance on her being another Lombax, or by flat out ignoring her completely.

Crack in Time's story is where she'd be potentially the most interesting because it's all about the Lombaxes. She could potentially serve as the counterargument to Azimuth, being the do-gooder that she is, and Ratchet is torn between the two. On the one hand you have Azimuth, who says "we have to bring back our lost people no matter the cost," and then you have Angela saying "we have to do the right thing even if we have to give up something we want." You also would have the duality of Azimuth, an older male Lombax who is fixated on restoring the lost Lombax civilization that he knows, and Angela, a young female Lombax who represents the potential to rebuild a new Lombax civilization while leaving the original behind, and then you have Ratchet who ultimately has to choose.
>>
>>80914985
They still make reference to Angela in the recent games, albeit they don't show her.
>>
>>80912136
I know this will sound gay but it's apparently because female lombaxes don't have tails. Though they still make her clumsy as if she HAD a tail at one point and is adjusting.

I just wish they dared to bring back the original jerkass Ratchet so he could get some character development over the course of the game/movie/movie-game.

While I liked the newer games a lot and ACiT is probably my overall favourite game in the series the style of the series has just lost some edge after the PS2 days

I'm not looking forward to watching some shitty reboot of the original Ratchet & Clank. Most video game movies suck and I don't think this will be an exception. The trailer didn't really convince me all that much.
>>
>>80922367
I think it's aimed at kids who are fresh into Ratchet. Hence why it's chronologically where the first game should be but a new story.
>>
My entire friend group saw the trailer in theater, we all were the target demographic when the games were big.

Not one of us wasn't stonefaced or about to vomit. One of us was profusely questioning why this movie exists, and he was a big fan of the series.

Even better, there were a ton of kids in the showing, and I didn't even hear a giggle. So I have no idea what happened when they sat down to write this movie.

I don't think this movie's budget is too high, so it'll probably at least break even if they don't fuck it up as badly as they did with the Jem movie.

Might go see it, I'm happy they didn't slap celebrities on the main characters, I really don't think star power in animated movies matters much anymore. Could easily keep costs to a minimum by actually using voice actors instead of celebrities.
>>
>>80922402
The real question is if the kids are going to give a fuck about this. Most of them probably don't even know about Ratchet & Clank.
>>
>>80922483
Yeah, totally want Steven Blum and Tara Strong hired for every role just like everything else that's animated.
>>
>>80918665

>>
>>80922483
Well, they did get Paul Giamatti and Sylverster Stallone to voice Drek and his lieutenant, but at least they'll go with James Arnold Taylor for Ratchet and David Kaye for Clank, who have been voicing these characters for most of the series.
>>
>>80905036
That is because the former is actually being fully produced by Sony while the later is being animated by Rainmaker. Also, Angry Birds is much more popular with normies than Ratchet and the former has a much larger and more prominent cast of celebrity voice actors (Josh Gad and Bill Hader are among those).

Makes me kind of wonder what the situation with Sly Cooper's voice acting, if and when the movie gets finished. Obviously Kevin Miller didn't do Sly's voice in that screen test, which is kind of odd because the guy doing his voice there was not a well known actor either. Bentley and Murray had their game voices which was good, at least. If they needed to pad up the cast with celebrities the obvious thing to do would be to cast famous people as the villains and whatever supporting cast Carmelita might have. Carmelita could go either way-- I could see them bringing back Grey Delisle for the role, although it's also possible they might cast a celebrity in the role since Carmelita had a different voice actress in every game.
