Why aren't there majestic and beautiful moments in cartoons anymore? They might have nice stories and some catchy tunes but they don't have those scenes that combine music, visuals, and drama to produce iconic moments.
Think of the stampede in The Lion King, or the end when he roars in the rain after defeating scar.
Think of Quasimodo holding Esmerelda above his head while yelling "SANCTUARY!" as Paris burns below. Think of Frollo seeing Esmerelda in the flames and shadows as he sings about his sins to sacred latin chants.
Think of the Huns slowly appearing on top of that mountainside and then charging. Think of Mulan turning around to that crowd of hundreds bowing to her after she saves the Emperor.
Nothing feels emotionally epic anymore. Cartoons might have big cool action scenes or really sad parts, but they don't feel ICONIC.
A girl might sing a catchy song on a snowy mountaintop, or you might feel bad for a fox and a rabbit, but there's no equivalent to any of the stuff I've listed above. The epicness is missing.

Films have gotten more fast paced. They can't linger on moments too long or the kids will get bored.

entertainment has been slowly but surely moving away from pageantry towards relatability as time goes on. look at old OLD movies and how much time they spend on big long slow pans of beautiful landscapes and just listening-to-an-orchestra-play.
look at musicals and how many times they repeated the same lines while dancing, because look! singing and dancing! that's great right?
life used to be this drudge of mundanity, now it's something we dont even GET anymore, it's hard to have friends or relationships, so that's all we really wanna see. just people hanging out and talking. we dont give a shit about music, we can just pop open the internet and there's music. all of it. all the music. you cant just instantly find a video about people talking and being normal though.
i wish porn would catch up with this. guys, nobody cares about the SPECTACLE of sex. i want interesting and erotic situations with real-sounding people talking to each other (or better, to the camera)

Pageantry and melodrama in fiction is great, as long as it doesn't overstay its welcome. Mufusa in the clouds is a perfect example. Audiences these days would see it as hammy or cliche, or over the top, and not a wild emotional revelation or outburst.
Not to get all religious, but I think Christians were on to something with the Spiritual Desert.

The fact that the king was the one crying while his wife comforted him really got to me. I know a couple who lost a child and the wife was able to hold it together but the husband was bawling. Something about large, older men expressing sadness or pain feels so much stronger than other people doing it: they're the ones most expected to be strong and steady, after all.
And, considering Rapunzel's being a healer and her mother looking extremely similar to her, it's sort of a "like mother, like daughter" moment to have her mother comfort her father. Little touches that humanize and draw their broken family together.

because as much as I love, say, Mary Poppins, I gotta say i always fall asleep at the long drawn-out sequences that are only there because 60s audiences weren't as easily bored.
but i'm sure every generation says this. i like the lion king's mix best because i was born in 1985 and it's my favorite movie.
