Steven Universe is kind of unique in it's storybuilding and character development. Star vs Evil kind of comes close, but it needs more time to develop, which hopefully will happen in seasons 2 and 3. Gravity Falls waters itself down too much but it makes for a great comedy (honestly, season 1 is so much better when it didn't take itself seriously). Adventure Time is a mix, it has both serious tryhard episodes and light hearted fun ones.
Make sure to pace yourself on SU, the more time you give yourself the less depressing the hiatus will be.

Star vs Evil is adorable
I'm going to give you a fair warning about S2, OP. There are quite a few good episodes. Overall the animation quality and sound design is considerably improved as well. However, if S1 is "laying the groundwork" then S2 is "building upon the foundation". It's far more experimental and personal in how it approaches the concepts and themes as well as introducing its own. At times it even feels like a different show than the first season.
My advice to you is: go in with an open mind and don't expect everything that S1 has given you so far.

Well to be honest, I've watched the series very recently for the first time and I really don't mind that so much. I'm hoping for the best, that it's a direct continuation from where we left off and the quality being as fantastic as before. I'm banking on her being a Ruby/Sapphire-type shorter gem, seeing as how the three of them + diamonds comprise the precious gemstones. Peridot and close after her Pearl. Although Pearls is the most developed and layered character in the show so far, Peridot is...the one I relate the most to. Not with everything of course but her curious nature and childlike wonder are character traits I recognize myself the most with. Also her drive for objectivity and rationalism. Just watching her develop and trying to find middle ground between the CG and Homeworld was great to witness

CN doesn't give us dates. They don't give the creator dates. And when they do decide to make a bomb after 4-5 months (it's always around that amount), it's 5 episodes long, aka 55 minutes.

I don't want to say it gets better, (hurdur that gay commercial campaign a while back) but it really does get better.
If you like waifus, video game/anime references, shipteasing out the wazoo, the sense of outside dread from implications, and pretty colors, then I'd stick with it at least for the first season, because the second is even better.
As for the dread, for example remember Fullmetal Alchemist Zbrotherhood, where Ed and a few other characters are in Sloth's tunnel, and Ed asks for a map and for another character to list the recent riots/battles/etc in their country. That horrible realization that you get right before the main character does, the way your blood turns to ice, the genuine fear at the scope of shit- THAT's what turns good stories into great ones.

I once heard a theory that Lapis Lazuli was like an interplanetary scout meant to find worlds suitable for Gem colonization. She's capable of interstellar travel under her own power, and her ability to control water would be useful on other planets. Plus, if her function of recording and playing back memories is related to her own abilities, it would be very helpful for showing the Homeworld Gems what she's learned in her travels.
Although that doesn't explain why she's powerful enough to control an entire planet's worth of water, which is way beyond what any other Gem is capable of.

Plenty of other people have basically said Lapis is Blessed with Suck- akin to being able to control only molasses. Sure, it'd be very useful in Boston during the 1600's (Molasses Flood) but otherwise there's never enough around to make you super powerful.
Water just isn't common enough in the galaxy to be an overpowered ability to control. But since Earth's surface is three quarters water, maybe having some gem that can control and lift that would be helpful.

I'm getting tired of people saying water isn't abundant in space and that Lapis is useless anywhere but Earth. There are planets almost entirely composed of water orbiting even our nearest neighboring stars, and based on the trillions of stars in the galaxy, the number of worlds with liquid water is immense. Plus seeing as how Malachite could manipulate ice (likely a Lapis ability), this makes her useful in working with frozen water, which is even more abundant.
Stop selling Lapis short. She's a high-ranking aristocratic gem with abilities on par with someone who can predict the damn future. Obviously BD gets some mileage out of Lapis. And anyway, why would a gem have the power to manipulate something they rarely, if ever, encounter?

Okay, imagine this now: what if Lapis was the gem equivalent of a Guild Navigator from Dune? She was (and perhaps others like her as well) responsible for facilitating mass "warp" travel throughout the galaxy. We saw her travel several light years to reach Homeworld in only a few months with nothing but water wings. That's waaay beyond the speed of light; like crazy faster than light. So now take for instance that huge water cloud: she could use something of that size to move entire fleetsor even planetsacross space at dozens of times the speed of light.
