Borag Thungg, earthlets of /co/! Time to read the latest Judge Dredd story, a comedy of errors if there ever was one, as the threat of slicey-dicey oncey-twicey warsy looms large over the 22nd century megalopolis of Mega-City One! With the survival of the human race caught between a claw and a sharp fang, top lawman Judge Dredd finds himself seeking the help of one of the most repulsive and pathetic creatures in the universe: Sensitive Klegg!
Courtesy of Rob Williams and D'Israeli, it's the heart-wrenching, teeth-clencing, bone-breaking, scale-scraping, hyper-educated tale of "Undercover Klegg"!
>>
>>80821464
For those who don't know, the Klegg are a race of brutal and brutish reptilian alien mercenaries who also control a vast conquering empire. They live by the claw and fang, the slicey and dicey, and the only thing they enjoy more than cruelly ripping their enemies apart with their razor-sharp teeth is singing about it.

I actually love it to bits. It's clear he's going for full cartoony over here, rather than the more subdued style of Low Life or the high contrast horror of Stickleback, and I think it fits the story flawlessly. Case in point: This. Fucking. Page.

You ever read Lazarus Churchyard and the steampunk martian-invasion comic (the first one, not the sequel), that was fucking great. Red-something? With the Colonel-type and the hard as nails Scottish butler?
Haven't read 2000ad for ages, stopped collecting in about 2004, I think? Is it...is it actually getting GOOD, again?!
>>
>>80822252

>>80822253
Fuck yeah, Scarlet Traces! Good news, chum: it's coming back. Soon.
As for 2000AD, it's going through a bit of a new Golden Age. Wagner comes back a dozen or so times per year to do really strong Dredd, and meanwhile a bunch of very good writers (Al Ewing, Michael Carroll, Rob Williams, Ian Edginton) do one-offs and such. Pat Mills is still as crazy as ever. Dan Abnett is spreading his wings and doing stuff other than Sinister Dexter. And there's a host of new series like The Order and Grey Area that are all kinds of great. There are a few stinkers here and there, but overall it's a much, much healthier book than it was in the early 2000s.
>>
>>80822376
(To be honest, I'm not the biggest fan of Rob Williams' work on Dredd, but when he's writing comedy like in this story he's on like nobody's business)

FUCK YEAH< Scarlet Traces! Loved that, man! That reveal....sheeit....
Thanks for the info, looks like I'll have to pick up an issue this week or next....is The Megazine still on the go? Gawd, when I was a kid there was SO MUCH 2000ad product, you had your Best of dredd Monthlies, Best of 2000ad monthly (which were divided by character), your Summer and Winter specials, obviously the weekly, then the Megazine came along...Golden Age, man, Golden Age...(I used to love the Rogue Trooper monthlies the best, all dat Kennedy, Wilson, Ewins and Gibbons...fucking gold, mate!). Thanks again for the storytime pal!
>>
>>80822622
Stick around for the catastrophic conclusion, earthlets!
>>
>>80822686
>Tasty Chief Judge
Well... he's not wrong...

>>80822683
Yup, Megazine is still going strong! They're also doing something pretty smart: bagging a small "mini-trade" with each issue of the Megazine, reprinting rare and small stuff that doesn't warrant a full TPB. XTNCT, Tyranny Rex, Strontium Dogs, that sort of stuff. Hell of a way to bring back some old favorites!
And speaking of old favorites... from one Rogue Trooper fan to another, 2011's Christmas Prog had a very, very special treat. An all-new Rogue Trooper story... written by Gerry Finlay-Day.
>>
>>80822763
Whoops, forgot the page! How Dreddful!

It's real. It's from one of the earliest Dredd stories.
Every old character left wingers write to be satire always ends up being correct in the long run. Wagner himself today admits that he wishes Dredd was in our world to pound punks.

haha
>>
>>80821875
>Tired and emotional

Haha, classic British Injoke
>>
>>80829899
>Tired and emotional
>The phrase tired and emotional is a chiefly British euphemism for alcohol intoxication (or drunkenness). It was popularised by the British satirical magazine Private Eye in 1967 after being used in a spoof diplomatic memo to describe the state of Labour Cabinet minister George Brown,[1] but is now used as a stock phrase. The restraints of the parliamentary language also mean it is unacceptable in the House of Commons to accuse an MP of being drunk, but one may use this or other euphemisms such as not quite himself and overwrought. The Guardian describes the phrase as having joined those "that are part of every journalist's vocabulary."[2] Because of this widespread interpretation, one source cautions professional British journalists against its use as "even if the journalist meant it literally," it could be considered defamatory.
>>
Last time the Kleggs showed up they'd soft-retconned them into being Badass Aliums and pretended the ones employed by Cal >>80827646
were mercenary rejects, it was back when 2000AD was trying to be all warhammer 40k lite, I guess they've gone back to the origins while still keeping the Kleggs as a credible threat.

Also the Kleggs were allies of Sino cit, I guess someone half remembered that to make the location of the talks there

yo so who we expecting wagner to kill?

Last time he killed a major was like 2010 when he killed feral (In possibly the worst work he's ever written), but i doubt he's gonna kill anymore sd characters without Grant.

so that leaves Dredd, its major so no Gunderson or Giant, probably somthing more like Hershey, Walter or Judge death. Or even Anderson again for like the fifth time.
>>
>>80842157
I'm also pretty sure humanity didn't win the Krool war. Danny may have stopped the them wiping everyone out by subverting the Krool Heart but with Earth and Aarrat destroyed they don't have much of a long term future.

And don't even get me started on Golgotha Joe, how Kano can be walking around full of holes and why the government would even give Bad Company retirement benefits, aren't they technically desserters?
>>
>>80842377
You won't get everything, only big arcs like the pit and origins get their own trade. Unless you want to pick up back issues which actually have some great non-Dredd stories and are fairly cheap... So yeah back issues do that either physical from eBay or digital from the 2000 ad website.
>>
>>80842521
Golgotha Joe divides me, on one part i liked him and thought it was a lovely brett tribute, on the other the build up to the secret informant had me so stoked to see the return of Mac, or even De Racine considering we never actually saw him die, but no.

The hole thing confused me considering we clearly seen Kano bled before.

The benefits thing could have been just a ploy to be seen good in the eyes of the public so ill let tha pass.

The good news is you will probably never read every Dredd comic. 2000AD puts out a new strip every week, Megazine every month. There were two DC series, the IDW ongoings and limited series, the movie verse strips and then there is the newspaper strips.
>>
>>80841191
Very true, friend. I bought (well, was bought by my Gran, who always ought me at least 5 comics every weekend when I stayed there) my first 2000AD in '85, didn't collect but got it frequently, probably started collecting in about '87, got hundreds of Toothy's in my attic. So I've seen a few cycles of great to mediocre and back again. It's such a blessing for nonscrots that so much of the classic stuff has been reprinted. The best of 2000AD is up there with the best comics ever....you can see why the Big Two poached so much of "our" talent.
One love mang this thread has seriously inspired me to start buying Toothy and the Megazine again!

GLANDER SCUM!
That little arc (drawn by Ian Gibson, I believe) was SO GOOD, when he rescues all those Stookies from the factory farm...thinking about it, it seems fairly blatant with the comics history I know now but the Stookies seem to me VERY heavily influenced (in design and general demeanor) by the Smoo's from whatsisface--Lil' Abner. Anyone seen a credible source for this anywhere? Seems fairly blatant, now. Anyway, great to see the compassionate side of Dredd.

Fuck me that's a hard question....I have a very vague memory of an appearance in the Judge Child Quest (?!!?!!??) for some reason...I have a weird memory as her portrayed almost like a sort of disinterested, semi-housewife-type personality, if that makes any sense to you mate....leave it with me por familia and I shall think more on this /co/mrade

I met Chris Weston at Thought Bubble last year, God his portfolio was outstanding...he was working on a sketch for a punter, head down, dude looked like a kind of nervous asocial-type (the punter, not Weston) so zero conversation was happening. So, observing non-rude/invasive social protocol I craned my head forward slightly, he still hadn't noticed me, and just said: "Crazy Larry Little Mo!". Chris looked up at me, blinked and with a smile on his face said: "bloody hell! You're a bit old school, aren't ya?!" I said, "well, not quite Class of '77, but, yeah, I probably AM pretty old school! Thanks for all the years of absolutely beautiful comics!" He very humbly said you're very welcome mate, it's nice to meet you, what's your name?", stuck out his hand and I shook it as I told him. Quickly congratulated him on a particularly lusciously-rendered Winwood & Cord arc then said my goodbyes. Btw for any nonscrots "Crazy Barry, Little Mo" was Weston's first Dredd story and (very possibly, although I think he may have done a Future Shock before?) his first pro job.

Once you finish the Case Files, you can start working your way up the collected TPBs. I'd suggest going Origins -> Tour of Duty -> Day of Chaos -> Trifecta, and then you can start reading the progs.

>>80842487
It's worth noting that Wagner never specified it was a Dredd character, so he could have been talking about Middenface McNulty over at Strontium Dog. But yeah, the pessimist in me says Hershey might not survive the year...

Not the one you responding to but I'm the guy doing storytime (day of chaos, lawless, undercover), just for you know where I'm coming from.
The think I like about Dredd is the fact I was able to start with a new story (prog 1900) and still able to enjoying it. Now I'm reading the complete case files and the TPB. Dredd is probably the comics with the easiest entry point. It was delightful compare to DC and Marvel

You're doing God's work! And yeah, absolutely. It looks daunting as fuck because, well, nearly 40 years of nonstop publication, but because the premise is so simple, most stories are one-offs and the writers are (usually) really good at filling in the blanks, it's much, much easier to get into than it sounds.
And man, prog 1900... Block Judge was SUCH a good fucking story. Would love to get that collected.

Hoho I remember this great little story..alsothose little, qiet one offs where Dredd wouldn't be in it save for one or two panels, quiet, introspective little character studies, I used to love those...thinking in particular of the mini-masterpiece "John Cassavettes Is Dead", just a triumph of the form...and from the same team who later brought us the unimpeachable "America".

What form of government does Mega City One technically have? It seems like a qualitatively new form of government to me that doesn't neatly fit into anything previously tried.

Police state? What's the technical term for this? Juris(ty)-cracy?

100% police state.

They had a movement to reinstate elected officials. The judges crushed it.

By the way, did Anderson's possible romance with wossface, the blind psi-Judge go anywhere?

There are some vestages of democracy, an elected Mayor and block councils but they are entirely cosmetic wielding no real power. For example for many years the elected mayor was an orangutan and no one cared.
Most of the acutal administration is left to incorruptible machines with Justice department having final say on all desicions.

are judges even allowed to marry and have kids?
>>
>>80866143
Nope, they can quit and settle down but otherwise unjudicial liaison gets you 20 years on Titan

>>80862431
not what i meant, the anti aging pills were mentioned in an anderson story, i think it was the Half Life one with Ranson art.
>>
>>80866143

>>80866351
can get you in trouble and maybe demoted, but not 20 years, read up on Ferd Plaski
