Almost done with Season 1, does the second season do more justice for the show? I really love this season, don't get me wrong, but it's played out a little long.

The most stand out thing to me is how inconsistent the episodes can be, in terms of how much I enjoy them. The art and imaginative designs are consistently fucking stellar, if nothing else I've been happy to watch just for the eye candy. However, I feel the show lets itself down at time in the other areas like comedy, plot and characters. Like it's never truly decided on if it wants to stick to a purely simple comedic format with simple characters or if it wants them to learn and develop with an overarching story line.
I'm halfway through season 2 now. Season 1 was, as previously stated, up and down in terms of enjoyment with the art and voice acting keeping me invested in the weaker episodes. The hater episodes were fantastic, I started to look forward to him and Peepers more than Wander and Sylvia at times, but there were great episodes for those two as well. I think what annoyed me the most from season 1 was Wander, Sylvia and Hater not learning the lessons from previous episodes. It made me care less about them as characters as they just weren't developing, and whilst I can appreciate the difficulty in balancing character development and comedy, it just came off as contrived at times.
Season 2 so far has felt much the same in all honesty. Whilst it's been nice to see villain themed episodes it usually relies on Hater acting like a massive idiot and ending up either where they started or worse than before with no real consequences. Wander continues to not really learn his lessons, but the positive points of the show remain true; it's beautiful and the comedy can really tickle at times. Dominator is interesting in that she's a villain trying to win, yet it feels more like the other villains are just incompetent and she's got basic sense on her side. I must admit, since Hater realized she was a lady he's been pretty terrible.

I disagree completely. I loved that it was actually a callback to the glory days of Looney Toons, it's what separates it from the majority of shows these days. I prefer that cartoons have less drama in them, because it's borderline impossible for them to do it well. It's almost always contrived at best, and poorly thought out at worst. Adventure Time and Regular Show became awful because of it, and it's the biggest flaw in Steven Universe.
