It started off with fans of the series being upset and complaining because that variant cover was in direct opposition with how Batgirl's character arch was developing at the time (or something like that). Then tumblr got a hold of it and started screaming muh feminism and that's what caused the shitstorm. Most people didn't care and still don't.
