I think it's just in the implicit social context of his situation. It's not really spelt (bar a few exceptions) out, because it doesn't have to be. However, in show they may elaborate on this. The Netflix shows have dealy with gentrification and catholic guilt, PTSD and rape(culture), most likely police brutality and racism next, it makes sense if Iron Fist deals with privilege, power, and identity. (White privilege, too, but that can only really done adequately with Luke as the foil.)
