I looked through every issue, read a couple but none ever grabbed me, in fact it kind of had me doubting Graham's taste as an editor...like howcome he gets such dope and experimental cartoonists for Prophet and then hires all these...wannabes....for Island?

I gotta disagree with you on some of the guys in Island. There is a bit of mediocre stuff but he gets good guys occasionally. Like I really love the artist for Queue, and that Tessa Stone comic was better than I thought it'd be. Plus even in the furry cover issue he has things like Katie Skelly and Sarah Horrocks, even if they only have three pages between themselves.
That's not to say there's not a lot of mediocre content though, reading harblush as a kinda trashy Degrassi drama with sex just happens to be a guilty pleasure I share with Brandon I guess.

You're pretty naive about how Image works.
They're a publisher like any other. Who ultimately owns the rights is immaterial; they have editorial control over what goes out. They in fact have to retain a degree of that - even Amazon's self-publishing does - because without the ability to terminate publishing agreements they'd be hostage to whatever lunatics are working in comics right now.
And - get this - in return for providing their publishing business to creators, Image takes a cut of all sales and of future exploitations of the rights. Because that's how they make their money.
It's not a charity, and you shouldn't treat it like one. If you don't like something they're putting out, the only thing you can do is stop buying. That's what they call "market forces". It's supposed to be the thing that makes capitalism worthwhile.

If they're any good and it's anything more than just a vanity publishing scam, they'll find other publishers. If they're bad, they won't. About this point is where most of them will whine about the lack of publishers (which is why some actually bothered to form Image, and why other relatively recent publishing startups have been created) and how hard they've already worked; but the problem with that second point is - nobody cares how hard you work. In any job. They only care about results, and that's what you get paid for. Taking out the middleman doesn't mean you're getting more money for the same amount of work - it means you have to work harder to get paid, because the middleman editorial and marketing teams aren't there to do it for you.

Kudos, forgot about Katie Skelly and Sarah Horrocks (who isn't my cuppa tea but is a recognisable talent, definitely) but as I said I just kind of flicked through most of 'em and can't even remember the two issues I read...funnily enough both Skelly AND Graham did comics for Michael Deforge/Ryan Sands porn anthology Thickness which were really good.

Yeah Horrocks is a bit rough, her lines are incredibly amateurish but her page composition and coloring show she has a good grasp of what she's doing. I really want to see where she'll go when she gets better at inking and not smudging the page.
Also I think Skelly reprinted NurseNurse recently, you should be able to buy it from her sight. The thing that's impossible to find is My Pretty Vampire.
I want to give Island a chance but everything about this anthology is wrong.

I get Island is suppose to be a platform for artists to do fucking whatever, but they could just as easily do it on Tumblr or whatever instead of Image. This could have been a shot in the arm for the industry as an anthology series, but instead it will only be remembered for gay furry porn.
