Peanuts in an established brand, they were trying to draw a few more people in. WiR had a smaller demographic (video game movies don't do well) and wanted to grab some more attention as well. Adding pop-culture shit into the mix is a last ditch effort to pull in another crowd since they don't think the main crowd will be captivated enough by it, and thus not sell as well.
Dreamworks should take notes on Zootopia, UP, etc. They were able to hold up on their own in marketing and the actual movie.
