I honestly understand how he feels. My mom, when I was younger, did a lot of shit that put me at danger or took me places where I shouldn't have been. She used to go to her dealers house and I assume fuck him or something and leave me in the car, and told me I couldn't go inside because there were snakes(yohoho, yeah I BET there were) or that the house didn't have any floors.
When I hit twelve I realized all the shit she was doing to me, this was right after my parents broke up and she tried to tell me that my dad wasn't my real dad, but DNA doesn't lie. So I cut ties with her, even ignored her once when my class took a field trip to the courthouse and she was waiting outside one of the rooms for her friend. I remember her crying.
I did this until I was eighteen, and only decided to give her a chance again after she had tried to clean up her act after getting hit with some crazy seizure.
It isn't easy to forgive someone for fucking up your life, but it's a good healing process that makes it so you aren't a judgmental piece of shit all the time.

I don't even know where to begin there, but I'll just say as a writerI do a quest over on anonkunif someone comes along and adds some nuance to any of my characters, I'd be thanking them for the contribution at the very least, even if it's not in the direction I want to take the character going forward. If a reader sees something that I don't, I think that's really fucking cool and nine times out of ten I will wind up factoring that into stuff going forward because it means more audience engagement, audience loyalty, and helping build my product to be even more than I thought it would be.

This is the thing that makes me legitimately upset. Getting away from an abuser or otherwise toxic person that you're close to isn't fun or pleasant. It's like ripping your own fucking arm off. It's painful and sobering and not something anyone, gay or straight enjoys.
And even then, Becky still didn't get her happy ending- she hasn't matured at all since the experience, and instead is still acting like a fucking child. The only issues Willis seems to have with his mom is that, from what I've seen, she's hella conservative and really religious. I don't think she was actually neglectful or abusive. But we really weren't. Slave labor was obsolete the moment the north industrialized. My grandmother probably has some sort of narcissistic personality disorder, and while I've never pressed her for details, my mom has made it clear that she was both physically and verbally (and possibly emotionally) abusive towards her. In spite of all that, my mom has worked to help "defuse" her and help her stop being so toxic and shitty to the point that sometimes I have a hard time imagining what she used to be like.

I think it depends on how abusive they are and why they're abusive. If the person has a personality disorder or a substance abuse problem, there's room for reconciliation. But when someone's just a shitty personlike my ex-gfthen you don't have any obligation to make it up to them. You cut them out of your life and never look back.
