I've been listening to the Kingsman soundtrack a lot recently. Henry Jackman's damn good at energetic action scores.

How far back would you consider "modern"?
What exactly are we considering modern? Because I still prefer the Donner theme, although the MoS theme isn't bad at all.

Good question. I guess since the first X-men movie.

How?
In the context of Zimmer? No, it's not a far outlier (though it is unique). in the context of cinema scores in general? It feels pretty unique to me.

So, 2000?
Shit. I was gonna suggest the '89 Batman film's soundtrack. Well then...

Good 'ole Danny Elfman.

>was gonna suggest the '89 Batman film's soundtrack
I considered that, but then I realized X-Men is what started the "current" capeshit movie trend.
>>80616399
The thing is with Elfman is that his main themes are fantastic but the rest of the OST for 89 Batman is just okay.
>>80616418
I think it goes back further to Blade.
>>80616472
>Blade
That's barely a cape movie, at the time plenty of people thought it was just a Wesley Snipes action movie.
>>80616472
While based on a comic, I'd hardly call Blade "capeshit"

Since the first X-Men? Eh... there's really been few really god-tier cape soundtracks. The two that immediately spring to mind are Williams' Superman and Elfman's Batman. Zimmer's Dark Knight and current DC Films work comes the closest.
In my opinion Zimmer's MoS is the best action score we've had in a long while. The Superman theme is perfect in how minimal it is, just a two note interval, yet somehow so hopeful and heroic at the same time. Zod's motif is terrifying and powerful, and the score makes the most of the third act action to go for the LotR-esque epic tone. Yet as well as that, the quieter moments, such as Clark's flashbacks, Krypton, etc, are all really well done as well and provide it with a strong emotional center - if only the film could have done the same.
An massively underrated cape score for me is from the Dark Knight Returns animated film.

Does blade have a good soundtrack? I've never seen it.
>>80615947
The only really standout part of this movie, not even marvel shilling its just the only part that stuck out to me.
>>80618366
I felt like the good parts of MoS were some of the best pieces of capeshit out there. The flight scene may be the only scene in the genre at this point that has truly celebrate superheroes. It's a shame so much of the movie was mediocre that gems like that have to be taken in a vacuum to really enjoy.

This is my problem with MoS - MCU movies tend to be same-y, and generally fall in the "enjoyable but forgettable", with some variations.
MoS, meanwhile, varied from amazing and creative to aggressively bad, depending on the scene. It was clearly more ambitious and aimed higher, but it frequently faltered. I think this unevenness is part of the reason so many people are critical of the movie.

There's only one correct answerhttps://youtu.be/9Ly_J143kh4
Yeah. The only cape composer comparable in skill to Zimmer is Elfman, and his stuff isn't "modern" since he hasn't done anything in ages.
