She almost always wrecks Zuko every time she encounters him. And anyway, she tries to one-up literally everyone she meets except for her father.

There were some pretty good signs (and admittance) in the series and in the book that Azula was jealous of Zuko because he was their mother favorite.
Because of that she always tried to one up in everything.

I think that may have been her longing for the mother more than the jealousy of Zuko, as shown by OP's pic, she clearly had mother issues, whether or not she actually wanted her mother to love her or just that she wanted to be the perfect child in the eyes of both her parents, it's hard to say.

Eh, there is certainly something psychologically wrong with Azula, but I imagine if Ursula was the lone parent or if she just had a better father in general, that she wouldn't have turned out so obsessive in her need for power/praise.
In the epispdes before Zuko defection was she only pretending to be in good graces with him or was she actually trying to connect with him?

Who knows, she might have just been trying to make him stay because she knew his conscience was plaguing him + him knowing the avatar is alive, and didn't want him to leave because he'd just cause more trouble one way or another.
Then again, the episode where they go to Ember island made all the characters act seemingly genuine, with Azula even revealing that she's irked about how her mother saw her, before brushing it off.

Only Azula said she treated her like/thought she was a monster, and we know her word can't really be trusted in any case.
All we really know is that they barely ever interacted, certainly not on a personal level at least.
Though from the hallucination Azula has just before the final agni kai makes it seem like she knew that Ursula did genuinely love her, at least in some way, but Azula was the one at fault for being afraid of/not accepting of that kind of unconditional parental love, because she thought fear was "the only reliable way"

When the Fire Lord didn't kill Zuko for disobeying him, she knew dad still had a soft spot for him. Azula knew she was better at playing war, but there was never any announcement she'd be next in line.
Which is why she goes bat shit crazy when she takes over by a fluke. She knows it probably won't last and if the HONOR-bound son can turn traitor, the help certainly would too.
