If you could pick one book you wish was required reading for all animation students would you pick The Animator's Survival Kit or Understanding Comics?

Definitely the former, but I guess that's a question of whether you have to understand narrative first or the actual nuts and bolts of how to animate. Obviously you need both but I feel like without the basic skills you're just going to be spinning your wheels even if you have good ideas.

Dumb question, but what program are actual studios using to make their shows? Flash is pretty much the go-to for anyone animating on the web, though Toon Boom's slowly rising in popularity it seems.

Give toon boom a shot; keep plugging away with Flash. Try Photoshop (quite a bit harder to manage all the layers), and try After Effects. You can probably find some character rigs for AE, but those kinds of things are usually built for specific camera angles. There are tuts out there for nearly every piece of software, but you'd also do well to pick up a copy of the Animator's Suvival Guide.

I mean to jump into Flash sometime, myself. I got my start in AE and Photoshop.
