Think of Washington DC right now and all the special theaters in the southeast. That area is a literal hell hole but the special art house theaters attract some pretty wealthy patrons. Actual muggings have taken place.
The Wayne murder is completely believable. They were looking for a cab because they couldn't call one to pick them up in front of the theater. Tomas thought he could take a shortcut down one alley and it ended up backfiring horribly.
