>Imagine if you will, you're a fan of CBS' You love Melissa Benoist, the dynamic is great, the stories are exciting... It's exactly what you've been looking for in a TV show (and the roughly seven million viewers who watched this week agree with you)! As a fan, you've already trolled the cast members' Instagrams daily, made your fan-art, and are ready to take it to the next level: you want to read the comics.
>So you march into a comic book store, and ask to pick up the new "Supergirl" comic. Well, you can't: it was cancelled in May, 2015 -- five months before the new show premiered on TV. And even then, that version of Supergirl had little to no resemblance to what is currently airing on TV... She was an angry, powerful alien who landed on Earth as a fully-costumed adult, battled Superman, and basically had no friends.
>"Supergirl" isn't the only problem here, though... When it comes to Marvel and DC's superhero output, the problem is industry wide. There have been varying tacks taken, and different strategies, but ultimately there are two ways of addressing this issue that must be taken, or Big Two superhero comics will continue to die on the vine.

Do you agree with CBR?
>>
No. Casuals can buy tv tie-in comics if they want, I don't understand the point of making every version the same.
>>
>>80394447
No. Obviously not. People don't read comics because they want the movies, they read comics because they want the comics.

If a character or team gets a movie/tv show then yeah, they should have an ongoing at the same time so that fans of those things have an avenue into the universe, but turning the universe into a mirror of the movie/tv show just ruins what made it special in the first place.

>Imagine if you will, you're a fan of DC's Supergirl. You love Kara Zor-El, the dynamic is great, the stories are exciting... It's exactly what you've been looking for in a comic book (and the roughly seven readers who read it last year agree with you)! As a fan, you've already trolled the creatice team's Twitters daily, made your fan-art, and are ready to take it to the next level: you want to watch the TV show.
>So you turn on your TV, and switch channels to the new "Supergirl" show. Well, that version of Supergirl has little to no resemblance to what you know and love in the comics... She isn't an angry, powerful alien who landed on Earth as a fully-costumed adult, she never battled Superman, and she basically has lots of friends and social bullshit nobody cares about.
>"Supergirl" isn't the only problem here, though... When it comes to Marvel and DC's superhero output, the problem is industry wide. There have been varying tacks taken, and different strategies, but ultimately there are two ways of addressing this issue that must be taken, or Big Two superhero shows will continue to be completely awful.
>>
>>80394447
Eh, I see their point, but honestly most people aren't dumb enough to buy floppies. If they like the tv show, they're going to want to get a trade for a full story. And the reprints DC has been doing for Supergirl for example are definitely worth the money since there's so many issues in them. Much better than going to comixiology or a store and getting a 32 page floppy filled with ads that's worth 2.99 or even more.
>>
>>80394447
Fuck no. I loved new 52 Supergirl and hated that garbage TV show. O'd rather it never come back than to turn into that.
Angry angsty kara was great.
>>
>>80394447
i am sure ready for the hellion and hellfire club comic, wait are you saying since the film right are in fox hands marvel wont produce a comic about those 2 entities, WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT ?
>>
>Option #2: Wipe It Clean, Make the Comics All About the TV and Movies

Absolutely fucking not. This kills creativity and would be a nightmare to coordinate.

>So you march into a comic book store, and ask to pick up the new "Supergirl" comic. Well, you can't: it was cancelled in May, 2015

so they'd just buy a supergirl trade?

I don't think most people who see the movies usually go to buy the comics, certainly not enough to cater your entire comic line to them

cbr am dumb
>>
>>80394675
Also those celeb likeness.
>>
We have good TV Shows and movies because the producers swam through a sea of shit stories to get the ones that work and then pump TV cliches to make them even more normie friendly.
You fuck up that cycle and Hollywood will have to think for itself.
>>
>>80394447
>Source Material should be like the Adaption
why are comic books the only media that faces this criticism

Do fans of Twilight demand that the book be changed to more in line with the movie

Do fans of Office US demand that the UK version be shot with an American cast.

Comic Films and TV show are adapted to appeal more to non comic readers taste, just like every adaption of everything ever.
>>
>>80394447

Sure if you want to brutally strip the genre of the tiny shred of creativity it has left.
>>
>>80394675
This. That is an atrocious idea.
>>
>>80394447
Is not industry wide problem when you can find Marvels characters on books.

Most of them

But /tv/ shows are largely made up of stories from comics and filled with references to it.

If both reference each other like the author of that article wants them to then what are the tv shows and movies in the future going to be based on?
>>
>>80394447
Fuck no, as long as the comics are there or tpbs people will pick it up, they can adjust to the differences.
>>
Just make a new universe in the comics where there are only the movie/show characters and stories that allign with them . Something like the Ultimate universe.

Leave the main one alone.
>>
>>80394675
>>80394734

>>
>>80394900

>>
>>80396905
Hey that's right, that's another thing. These versions seen in the films and TV won't always last and Hollywood is prone to rebooting.

I'm actually glad that the CBR forum generally thought the article was bullshit (but most put it nicely).
>>
>>80394447
yeah, let's marginalize the comics even more by retooling them to be entirely like a show that has maybe five years worth of shelf life, if you're lucky.

What if the show/movie bombed? Do you still spend a year of you publication plans shilling to a commercial failure, then spend another year writing out everything that was tied to your previous media synergy plan when it didn't take or do you just drop it like a stone a d pretend it didn't matter?
>>
>>80394764
comics are ongoing you fucking twat.
>>
Comics are already a mess with continuity and different universes and all this shit.
Just imagine how much worse it would be if for every tv show or movie they would have to rewrite anything related to it.
>>
All of this can be solved with advertising.
At the end of the episode it should run something like "if you liked this story check out this trade"
or even better DC has this "essentials" catalog where they have a top 10 list per character of storylines. Just advertise that characters most important stoylines. fuck
>>
Why the fuck would they want that
Movie/tie-in comics are largely the most generic and safe products in reality
Are they subtlety telling us that it's going to happen

Anyway we all know that comics will never die because they're backed by huge multimedia companies
>>
>>80394447
No. Stop. Stop overthinking it.

Just write good comics and the audience will follow.
>>
Just disband the comics altogether. They've been nothing but a slow-growing cancer over the decades.
>>
>>80394447
i disagree that they need to align with the movies and shows. they just need to be available.

there is legit proof from retailers that tv shows bring in new audiences more than the movies. DC is basically at the front of the tv audience right now - Marvel has great Netflix shows in DD and JJ but AoS is garbage and Peggy Carter barely has a comic to her name.

Anyways Supergirl has a current digital book coming out and that should hit print soon enough. Along with a Supergirl comic with the Rebirth relaunch, there will be plenty of her to go around in comics.
>>
>>80396654

Universe didn't work since it was eventually just 616 stories retold. And the "no-come-backs" rule meant that it was impossible to clean up messes of other writers.
>>
Yeah just like Teen Titans fans went and bought that Teen Titans comic with the cartoon versions of Starfire and Robin and shit.
Wait no, they didn't

>>80394538
They're always rebooting the comic book universes. If a comic has a good TV or movie adaptation then why not cherry pick some of the best shit from it and put it into the comics. I mean that's how we got Harley Quinn.
>>
>>80398794
Yeah, and that's turned out great.
>>
>>80398824
Well it did.
She's one of the most popular female comic characters, is their second highest selling solo book and third highest book consistently, and is going to be a lead in a movie.
>>
>>80394707
Wasn't there a run when Diggle and Felicity were a thing in the comics?
>>
>>80394447
align in what way?
Is Tony the creator of Ultron?
Falcon no longer talks to birds and has a shorter history with Cap?
Ironman has worse villains?
Dead Quicksilver?
That all sounds shit. Movie stories don't always go well into comics and it just makes more sense to adapt the original comic to the screen with some changes to compensate. Taking a form of story telling that is limited by technology, money and other factors and adapting it to a medium that is much less limited is dumb.
Some alignment is fine, like Coulson showing up every now and then or Harley moving to comics but don't do stupid shit.
>>
>>80399164

>comics are ongoing you fucking twat.
It's so alienating when you pick a book of Song of Ice and Fire up and Tyrion is now suddenly disfigured, but good at combat and he's no longer pals with his brother, what the fuck?
GRRM should really change that for Winds of Winter. He should also include that love story between the eunuch and that one translator lady because that's so popular and fans from the show will be alienated if they don't find that in there.
And why is it still called A Song of Ice and Fire? Everyone is looking for the Game of Thrones books and they get confused when they only find one book that covers the first season.
>>
No, and regular comic sales are great right now, compared to the 00s.
>>
