The dude's DA is mostly his own work and light on fanart. He prepped for months to make sure his comic was done right. Neither of those things mesh well with partial story your friend told you.
Nobody is friends with everyone, but I wouldn't go believing he's pissed off a lot of people just because you know someone that doesn't care for him.
