It was much less absurd than they're making it out to be. Toonami just wasn't worth keeping around as they hit the end of what they could do with 4kids dubs what with all the people who liked Toonami moving on. The "real" block was a dumb idea but it was just meant to be a block, not a replacement. In the end, the stubborn asshole who made the real block finally stopped trying to push it and toonami got revived for the people who actually want it.
The real downfall was everything Adventure Time onward.

What CN did was one of the biggest mistakes and that nearly killed the network. It's really hypocritical to it's name as Cartoon Network airs only animated programming 24/7. Shows that combine live action and animation regardless of degree are the only types of live action content that would be accepted on the channel. Flapjack was great but only the first season of Chowder was really good. The second had a few alright episodes but overall it just wasn't as clever and funny.
They killed all their Cartoon Cartoons, fucked with their logo, and after school Toonami then stayed shit for years while ceding more and more airtime to Adult Swim.
Fortunately a large chunk of that damage is being or has been mitigated.
