It's not every adult's responsibility to be every young adult's parents. That's the actual parents job. They fucked up not kicking bojack to the curb, letting him take her to prom, etc. They're supposed to circumscribe everything she does, bracing her for the decisions she's going to have to make in a year or two, with basically the same character as she has now. Most of her character will be formed when she either rejects/accepts this preparation.
