they are named for their subtype which differentiates them from other quartz. Rubies are called ruby and rose quartz is shortened to quartz. Im guessing rebecca sugar is too stupid to make up applicable alien names for definition. amethyst would be purple quartz but the gems seem to natively speak english as if all of its changes and adaptations from its origins were directly imported into them.

I guess, but is there any significant difference between the subtypes of Quartz? Amethyst actually looks a lot like Jasper, just way smaller because she was a runt. Rose is pretty different at least, she chose a more human-looking form and has healing powers, but that could just be because she's such an individual.

We've only seen three variatons of Quartz so far, and one of them (Rose) is very different than the other two outside of being huge and beefy.
