I was actually watching the first episode of Johnny test with my little sister a few days ago. She didn't believe me that the show is actually from the early 2000's. And yeah, back when it was actually drawn it was a passable children's cartoon. Shame it was resurrected and repurposed to what we have today.
>>79742246
I'm glad someone admits it. It's definitely not the worst cartoon EVER, but I think it's the worst cartoon on right now that seemingly gets a lot of praise.

S1 had squash-and-stretch. Cookie Jar Media then squandered the show and made Johnny one of the flattest characters of his time.
>>79745580
Calling a TV show a "shared idea" as an insult is a tactic used by spastics who can't live with themselves if something they like has a fanbase of more than two people. As soon as something is moderately popular, it is immediately overrated.

JT may have been a terrible plague on CN for years but the first season that aired on Kids WB wasn't really all that bad especially considering it ran in a block with Mucha Lucha, Pokemon, and Yugioh.

The only thing TD is credited with is the awful flanderization done to the original cast in its later seasons. Total Drama Island was an amazing season, claiming it is the worst gives this horrendous pile of dogshit >>79743129

While its not the worst I've seen, Steven Universe lacks humor, is full of cringey themes, has more ugly characters than nicely designed ones, and appeals to the lowest common internet denominator with forced anime and SJW pandering.
Not the worst, but certainly among the most shamefully overrated and obnoxious.

I consider Mega Babies, Super Duper Sumos, and Butt Ugly Martians as the unholy trinity of our time, although the 70's produced so much garbage I'm sure there's something worse.
Speaking of which, while the show itself wasn't inherently bad, the original Scooby Doo was probably the single show with the biggest negative influence in the history of animation.

>>79749955
It basically opened up the floodgates to cheap, mass-produced animation that was so common in the very late-60's through to the early 80's. It was literally made to be as inoffensive as possible, in response to complaints of violence in superhero shows at the time, and was such a big hit that EVERYONE started copying the formula, even Hanna-Barbera itself. This effectively started an arms race to the bottom, to see who could produce the cheapest, blandest, most profitable cartoon as fast as possible. There was suddenly a massive flood of really shitty children's programming, which is widely regarded as the source of the whole "animation is for kids only" thing to this day.
>>79750258
Forgot to add, the push for cheapness was also largely pushed by the poor state of the economy through the late-60's to early-80's. In fact animation quality seems to follow economic trends pretty closely if you think about it.
>>79750258
And laugh tracks in animation. Scooby Doo was alright by itself but I hope the bastard who thought up putting a laugh-track in burns in Hell for all eternity.
>>79746822
>The Bubsy Pilot
>>79749955
Not the guy but I can explain. During the late 50's and early 60's animation transitioned from theatrical shorts to television. The first crop of shows, while having shoestring budgets, still managed to make good use of animation principles from the 20's-40's. I'm talking about the original Jay Ward stuff, the TV Terrytoons, the first wave of HB, and Beany and Cecil. However, once HB had competition from Nelvana in the late 60's they stopped caring about the quality in order to compete. Scooby Doo was one of the first shows to be of worse quality, and unfortunately spawned it's own genre which plagued 70's Saturday Morning stuff.
TLDR: It was the first TV animated show to literally drop all standards of animation quality
>>79750258
>>79749955
There was a point that whenever a network cancelled a Hanna Barbera cartoon they got a new cartoon... from Hanna Barbera. They had almost no competition and no reason to improve.

ONE JOB.
The New Adventures of He-Man.
I grabbed a torrent of it a long time ago and could never watch past the first couple minutes after the intro. It diverges so much from the source material [not to mention the half-assed plot device] that only a couple names are what's left of Filmation's series.
It lost the charm of the original show and gained one that could be called 90s style. Might even be one of the first series to use that style.
I know /co/mblr loves this show, but it's so offputting I have to post it

Unfortunately not, I have a solid knowledge base of this stuff because I've gone hell out of my way to learn it. There's no one true animation history book, because no one thought that 60-70 years later this kinda thing would be important. Heck, even the accounts published by Disney are fudged to make them look like saints, when their bullshit ways forced some of the better draftsmen out of the company Bill Tytla and Grim Natwick come to mind but theres others too.

If you want a "good history" and not a super-broad overview, it's gonna be a long journey of research.
There are lots of helpful books out there. It'd be hard to tell you a place to start, but no single book can tell the entire story (just like the history of any field), so I'd recommend picking any specific topic you like (studio, director, decade, whatever) and just jumping in with some books on that subject.
In American animation, the influential people tended to impact each other a lot, so you'll find some overlap that connects different studios, people, etc in any given book. But if you want to learn about animation from all around the world, that'll take much more time & effort to get the full picture.

Steven Universe
>>79763538
Da Boom Crew and Mega Babies look annoying, but the other two look downright aggressively mediocre and boring, and I think that's the worst thing a cartoon can be.
Sure, stuff like Alan Gregory is painfully bad, but at least it makes you FEEL something, even if it just makes you irritated or disgusted. It impacts you in some way. If a show has no impact, if it's as bland as staring at a blank wall, then it's extra horrible.
"The Brothers Flub" is another bit of pure mediocrity ilike that:

As a Chilean I can confirm that last statement, it was mainly because it aired in the time where the evening TV had only cartoons and kids, like me at the time, only would watch that, then it got pushed away with reality show garbage and shit like pic related
