Is anyone excited for Disney's Moana when it comes out at the end of this year? Just the concept of Oceania and a fantasy film instantly have my attention since Pacific Islanders especially love their folk tales of spirits, demons and especially the night sky.

I probably sound biased since I was born in Papua New Guinea. oh well
>>
>>79735920
I know nothing of these cultures or folk tales, but I think it looks cool too. And Disney Animation Studio has been doing very well recently.
>>
>>79736197
I honestly thought the zootopia 3d would be attocious but it looks absolutely god tier. I'm actually so happy they're doing the 3d thing and pushing the boundries of new animation techniques

I actual am a bit excitebike about it if for no other reason than I have no idea about these cultures and it mite b cool.

For all the bitching about NEEDING diversity there doesn't seem to be much push to create material based on often ignored areas of the world. Just that we need more token brown people.

I mean there's a student videogame at my school and it's got a black Greek goddess. If you wanted a black person, just fucking make a game that uses African mythology. But nobody seems to bother learning enough to do that.

Sometimes I suspect that most of the veteran staff from Pixar got into Disney Animation Studio; leaving only juniors and left-overs at Pixar.
>>
>>79736298
I don't know. Remember when people were talking about Frozen being too white? I remember hearing a lot of people say that they should have drawn from African folk tales. Those people are out there. Not everyone just wants tokenism.

Regardless, I agree that this looks interesting.
>>
>>79736298
Seconding this;
I enjoy drawing webcomics about mythology on my free time. I do enjoy putting "diversity" in it in the sense that I like reading about folklore from all over the world and writing about it, but simply changing a character's skin color just feels so goddamn shallow to me.
If all "diversity" means to you is different shades of Brown in the cast you're ignoring the diversity of cultures these people come from

This movie looks great too, the Pacific Islands are even more under-used as a basis for a fantasy setting than Africa .

Okay, you see that big motherfucker there in the OP? The one that Rock "The Dwayne" Johnson is voicing? That's Maui. His fish-hook can catch anything, but he's a terrible fisherman anyways because he prefers to do things like fish up the ground from under the water to make islands.

Maui is pretty much the folk hero of Polynesian mythology.

Once, when the sky got too low and made it so people couldn't stand up enough to do anything, he laid down and powerlifted it back up with some help from his dad.

Another time, the sun was moving too fast and the days were so short, so he climbs up the tallest mountain and catches the sun using some rope made from his sister's hair. He restrains it until it begs for its life and promises to make the days long again.
>>
>>79736440

Pole here, actually Poland was a very diverse place for centuries, unfortunately African-Americans were not invented yet, and those diversity warriors don't care about any other cultures, so they probably wouldn't know who the Janissaries were, for example.

Fa/tg/uy here, I think it's been discussed in the past when alternate construct types came up because someone wanted a tiki construct. The problem is not enough people know Pacific Islander mythos, which is a shame because it's got a lot of good stuff. For example a Hawaiian myth is the old Hawaiian kings and their followers will sometimes march down from the mountains at night. If you were to see the glow of this event you had to drop to the ground and not look upon them, for anything showing disrespect would be found cut down including trees that dared to stand taller then the mighty kings.

I'm pretty excited not only for the mythology, but they have a great crew working on it. Clements and Musker directing and writing along with Taika Waitit and Lin Manuel Miranda writing the lyrics. Moana's VA has a cute voice too from what I've heard so far, and the actor formerly known as The Rock is always a fun time.
Plus, it looks like it's going to be gorgeous.

She looks way too much like my older sister, so I can't waifu her.
>>
>>79736298
Yeah, exactly. I really hate tokenism, and I dislike this idea of blackwashing characters for absolutely no other reason than "diversity". The world is FULL of folk tales to adapt, so instead of remaining Eurocentric but at the same time insisting that white culture's folk tales are revamped to artificially include a diverse, ethnic cast cosplaying as fake-euro royalty, I'd much rather see stuff that actually originates from other cultures, with a naturally ethnic cast since it's their legends and their folk tales. It's more interesting that way, too.

Like take Africa, for example. From what I understand they have a really rich folktale tradition, full of adventures with witches and talking animals and clever women who save their village or whatever. Great material. But instead of pushing for their own stories to be told, black people (from the US) seem to be pushing for white stories to be told, just with artificially black characters. "Oh, this ancient nordic god is totally black now!" Why not lift your own ancient gods to the spotlight instead?

So, I'm actually excited for Moana, because I look forward to seeing some stories and bits of legend from that part of the world, even if it's disneyfied. Definitely going to see it in theatres

Huge, oafish Obelix-like sidekick looks incredibly predictable, and he's so much more cartoony that the contrast is jarring.
I mean, it's appealing to see Obelix alongside the similarly exaggerated Asterix, but since "Obelix" here has a much more realistic pal, it's actually hard to look at him after I've looked at her—he registers as fugly deformed.
>>
>>79741519
Just a matter of time, I think. After all, the kids who grew up with Bionicle are now approaching the age where they can start to get into the business.

There's even currently a "reboot"/G2 that's dialed back the Farshtey weirdness quite a bit. It's definitely more of a throwback to the earlier stuff. That said, there are some differences like:
>fathers and sons actually being a thing
>way more mentioning of stuff associated with death (skeletons, tombs, etc.)
I kind of like it, it gives me more of a tribal-ish vibe.

The downside is that there's a lot less worldbuilding so far.
I'm staying optimistic, though. There's even going to be a Netflix miniseries.
>>
>>79741736
Yeah, I saw stuff about the reboot. Gotta catch up sometime and see if it's worth it.

I didn't even exactly MIND the Farshtey weirdness sometimes, it's just that every once in a while he took things way too far. You could kind of tell he was using Bionicle as an excuse to cram in genres/ideas that he never got to put in works he wanted to write himself but never took off. Lots of donut steel-type OCs as well. Sometimes they were fun, but sometimes they were pretty annoying.

Nuparu is best guy.
>>
>>79741736
I stopped caring around Metru Nui. I didn't feel the Bionicle city vibe.

Which is ironic because I fucking love it when Transformers are on Cybertron.
>>
>>79741973
I actually stuck with it all the way through. Metru Nui was actually pretty interesting to me. They should have toned things down a bit, but I liked the idea of a lost city and the Matoran having a fall from grace that led to their tribal lifestyle.
>>
>>79740084
>Why not lift your own ancient gods to the spotlight instead?

Black people in the US don't really have ancient gods. There's no way for them to know what their heritage was like before their ancestors came to America, and the American education system and entertainment media don't popularize African folklore at all, so they wouldn't feel any cultural connection to African folktales unless they or a specific group they belonged to sought them out out of personal interest.

For that matter, white Americans don't have all that much more connection with European fairytales, considering many Americans are genetic mixes of multiple nationalities that they similarly are not well educated about. The main difference is that at least those fairytales have been popularized in the US and taken a cultural foothold. Yet even then, it's mostly more specifically German stories (Grimm) with a dash of other European stuff that has taken root, and are valued by plenty of Americans aren't descended from those particular cultures at all.

I forgot the name of the movie I was watching in a film class but we had this whole discussion about how the children on immigrants tend to first reject learning anything about their culture because (US) society teaches mixed race and non-white people to feel ostracized/ashamed for their roots. Often times this deeply hurts the parents who feel like who they are is a cause of embarrassment for their children. Thus, in order to conform, the children adopt US ideals, & the parents don't teach anything about their culture. It isn't until the children become old enough to realize that this is bullshit or aspects of their culture become a mew fashion statement by white people that they run back to their parents, hungry to know everything that they missed. By then, they're really only learning a small portion.
>>
>>79744711
Yep. It's damn hard belonging to a different heritage than the majority.
>>
>>79744074
Well, a lot of it's based on which Disney movies I saw as a kid, I'll admit it.

But I'd still say that on the whole, I prefer the older stuff more (to be nitpicky, Golden Age up until right before the "Dark Age"). There's an element of sincerity and love of the craft that I just don't see in modern Disney. Not to mention the lack of awareness, either of itself or its audience. Nothing about "muh racism" or "think of the kids". There was still a willingness to explore new territory.

Even in so-called "bad" movies like The Aristocats, there was at least some character lent to it. There was a specific tone to each movie, and they were all distinct from each other.

I was astounded when as a little kid, I saw the special features on the, let's say, Bambi VHS tape, and there was this whole thing about how they animated a single drop of water. Or when I saw how people animated on cels.

Now I'm not saying that 90's/Renaissance era movies are total shit, either. But they receive a lot more attention on the whole than they deserve (and I blame Tumblr and "90's kids". Especially since a lot of them share the same overall tone.

This is even more so the case with Pixar, in my opinon. (Let me put it this way: WALL-E is by far my favorite.)

Yes, I'm one of those people who go "muh 2D". I hate that Frozen and Big Hero 6 were in CGI and think they would have been much better hand-drawn or at least tradigitally animated.

Since this is a long-ass post I'll just stop here. You should probably know where I'm coming from by now.
