DC all day erryday. Great heroes, great lore, great stories.
>>
DC. Marvel had some truly great books in the past but too much about their universe turns me right off them.
>>
Marvel but the last physical comic I bought was wack ass ghost racers 1
>>
At the end of the day o look at my shelf and see more Marvel than DC, going to have to go w oh the Marvel, just more characters that I care about.
>>
DC though the New 52 killed it for me. At least there was Multiversity.

Think Marvel has been more consistent on the whole minus their 90s phase of utter shit. I'd say, as a brand, they're objectively "better", but little can compete with the indoctrination into DC fandom the DCAU accomplished.
>>
>>79721121

Marvel had 2 great decades. is in general better.
>>
DC, as long as I've lived and for the foreseeable future.
>>
i like reading both, but i prefer DC.
>>
I grew up with both in the 90s, but then I reread them a decade later and DC worn much better; since then, I prefer DC.
>>
I like Marvel lore, characters, stories better.

Marvel I guess.
>>
Both produce a prodigious amount of utter trash. Both produce the occasional good run.

Actually making a list

Marvel:
Miller Janson DD
Elektra Assassin
Nocenti Romita DD
Simonson Thor / FF
Claremont Byrne (up through Romita Jr on the book) X-Men
Punisher MAX
New X-Men
Steranko Shield
X-Statix
Sienkiewicz Moon Knight / New Mutants
Kirby FF
Immortal Iron Fist
Marvel Boy
Weapon X / Machine Man
Earth X

From DC it would be

Watchmen
DKR
DKSA
Year One
Ronin
Final Crisis
Orion
New Gods
Mr. Miracle
All Star Superman
Giffen Levitz Legion
Some other assorted stuff.

Obviously this isn't including things like Epic or Vertigo.

>>
Including Vertigo and Wildstorm? DC. Not including Vertigo and Wildstorm? Still DC. Just better characters, and more importantly, more well written books than Marvel has, easily.
>>
DC pretty easy, I like both but DC has been around for longer and Marvel was dead to rights during the 90s and for a good chunk of the '10s.
>>
>>79721626
When I was around 18 I realized that Iron Man killed a lot of people in his first movie and that's what made me go to DC. Iron Man isn't a super hero
>>
DC. I do enjoy some Marvel, mostly Spider-Man and X-Men, but as a whole, DC all the way family.
>>
DC. Its simple. The ONLY good shit to come out of Marvel was Ennis's MAX run, assorted Spiderman (Loeb), FF4 (Hickman), Daredevil (Miller) and X-men. Most other Marvel shit is garbage

Funny enough I find Marvel to have more forgetable super hero stories than DC, I have two reason for it.

1- it seems their characters are rooted in conflict, and so the status quo must always return to that conflict, while DC's "blander" character pick up small tidbits of characterization every odd story and stick with it.

2 - the Marvel universe is more "interconnected", every mutant fights the same enemies, every cape fights the same guys in New York, while DC lets each character have their own little microcosm and so grow a set of supporting characters stronger than a civilian love interest or banging some mutant broad.
>>

I like em both for different things.

Marvel feels more like real people with more distinct personalities and flaws between them. In general they seem more creative on powersets and mixing everything together. Seems like a more lived-in universe. I feel like it goes further into sci-fi and fantasy with the complexity and world building. They manage to ill every single good idea every fuckign time whenever left to their own devices. It's a bunch of wasted potential, especially these later years trying to seem hip and cool.

DC feels much colder, with everyone being an indestructible righteous brick, but they manage to make these archetypes work when they give them the else-world deconstruction and tend to hit my philosophical bone harder. Every single person having a family of up to 10 people with the same power is an interesting concept (different personalities in similar circumstances) that fails to interest me most of the time.
>>
>>79722597
I'm bipartisan but DC and the companies they bought started the Golden Age (Action Comics #1), Silver Age (Showcase #4) and the Dark Age (Dark Knight Returns, Watchmen, Crisis on Infinite Earths )

I read both, but definitely prefer DC, Spider-Man was the first hero I was obsessed with growing up so there's still some love held over for him, Ultimate in particular is something I have some a lot of love for.

But then that love ebbed and Batman became my new obsession and I grew up on the DCAU and that love never faded. I also just think that DC has produced more truly great runs and single stories.

Like I don't / won't read a majority of the work from either because it is boring run of the mill shit.

He didn't have an argument either, he just said something hilariously wrong. I made this argument a few days ago, but DC is better know for it's magic side which is full of non traditional cape stories, while Marvel has a better developed cosmic side, but even then the comics are mostly just "capes in space". marvel built their entire company on making classic superhero stories with "relatable" leads.
You look at DC's biggest hero(Batman) and the Grant Morrison is far away from "house style cape", while on marvel you struggle to find something(especially in the last couple of years) that's not just straight cape. Even characters with lore deeply rooted in occult like Ghost Rider and Dr. Strange get relegated and turned into just normal superhero comics and put on the Avengers.

House Style refers to the "status quo" art style that publishers settle on for a given time period. I'm re-reading through Morrison's run right now and as much as I love it, The whole run up until Quitely takes over is house style.
>>
>>79724007
Even after Quitely leaves and before Burnham takes over there are some rough parts in the middle there too.

Well, Marvel may have heroes but DC has THE heroes, Batman and Superman respectively, plus - much deeper lore and always, in Batman case especially, anthropological take in the stories instead of Marvel's "relatable" pandering characters. So, DC.
>>
>>79723896
So now we don't just have company wars, we have time wars IN the one company.
>>
>>79723951
No, it's not you fucking retard. That's just the first couple of issues. I think the most issues an artist has done on his Batman run is Burnham. Other than tan that the run had JH Williams III, Frazer Irving, Frank Quitely, Ryan Sook and Yanick Paquette.
>>
Peace on Earth is my favorite comic of all time, even more than TDKR and Watchmen and ASSM
>>
I like Marvel heroes more, but I enjoy more DC comics overall. Currently I'm also reading more DC than Marvel.

However, I can't seem to get really attached to DC characters like I do with Marvel characters. I think the settings and stories are much more interesting than the characters themselves when it comes to DC.

Morrison Batman run ha something like a million artists working on it, that';s the exact oposite of hosue style. House style is safe and same-y fast artists that draw realistic looking characters and have basic layouts.

The "DC is house style" argument is never backed up with any examples, it's just a meme at this point, especially considering how DC has a wide and diverse pool of artists right now while Marvel is settling into a house style with Henderon clones(like the IronFist/Luke Cage artist)
>>

Man. DC writers of the Silver age were that bad that they suddenly became good and then bad again.
>>
>>79724293
Yes but this thread is not about current DC and Marvel.

>>79724135
I am pretty sure Kubert did like 10 and then Daniel did at least 10-15 with like 3 issues by Williams in the middle.

That run starts earlier and lasts way longer than anyone actually thinks about.
>>
>>79724434
Daniel did fewer issues than Kubert and Burnham did about 12-13. It still doesn't matter since having your art fluctuate and change so much during one run is the exact opposite of house style.
>Yes but this thread is not about current DC and Marvel.
If you're not going to compare their current 50-60 series then what, you're going to cherry pick what you want out of decade of comics to prove your point?
>>
I personally stick with DC but I'm always willing to read anything that catches my interest.

now question, any good Western in the Marvel side? the weirdest the bestest
>>
>>79724658
Well in the years I have been reading comics I have found myself drawn more to the Marvel side if we are only taking these two in and the reason for that has been the artistic talent Marvel has drawn over the years has been more appealing.

Nothing I can say will ever be representative of all DC comics or all Marvel comics and no one expects that.

DC comics and their characters seems more the ones to have a thick jaw and strike a heroic pose than the Marvel ones and that tends to lead to a certain style of art.

Also it looks at the artistic styles the Boom of both companies was founded on. Looking at early Kirby and Ditko Marvel stuff and the DC stuff at the same time personally the Marvel side has always looked more interesting visually and that has continued for every decade from a glance.
>>
The only thing i cared about Marvel was the cosmic stuff, now that is gone there is nothing remotely interesting for me in there.
>>
Which company had the artists that were so popular they could leave and make their own company with blackjack and hookers again

>>
>>79724988
But you're just cherry picking. Both Ditko and Kirby did work for DC too. So did Frank Miller. And Alex Toth did a lot more work for DC. All you're doing is cherry picking and stereotyping based on what you heard some guy repeat what he heard from some other guy.

Almost everything DC has done is on the front line of comics history.

Marvel is only known for the 60s and their fuckups in the 90s

DC. They seem to have more diversity, in the sense that their stories and situations vary from year to year, and I appreciate the amount of times DC's gone to bat for some Z-list comic that obviously wouldn't make it two years, yet breaks the mold with what little time it has.

Marvel just feels like a bunch of people in samey spandex gallivanting around New York for decades, rarely branching off from a city Ijust don't care about. Still, I feel that Marvel was doing neat experiments with Daredevil/Hawkeye/Moon Knight/Thor: God of Thunder/Superior Foes of Spider-Man, but that's all fallen by the wayside and nothing's replaced them.

>Golden Age
Not really relevant in a Marvel vs. DC discussion due to all of the mergers and name changes and whatnot

>Silver Age
Both stellar but Marvel wins by a hair. A HAIR.

>Bronze Age
Impossible to choose. Both 10/10. Best era in mainstream comic by far.

>late 80's / 90's
DC because Vertigo

>2000's - today
Don't really read either but I'll give it to DC because of the Morrison Bat Epic / Hypercrisis
>>
>>79728456

Read Claremont's run or Morrison's run. Everything else is awful or a pale imitation of one of those.
>>
DC by miles. I much prefer DC shared universe in comparison to Marvels. All the individual characters have supporting casts and Histories of their own and crossovers feel more organic. I was enjoying the current Daredevil run from Marvel but the sudden appearance of Captain America for absolutely zero reason has killed all interest. Also I can point to any DC hero hero and find a great run. Something I can't do for Marvel even though a handful of their heroes have some of the best runs in Comics
>>
>>79728514

It's been true for as long as DC and Marvel have been around that DC does better elseworld/isolated stories for their heroes will Marvel has better in universe runs. Those days are fucking over now since Marvel keeps relaunching
>>
>>79721121
DC has more substance, high quality and their aesthetic is alot better, plus they don't push that much leftist liberal propaganda

>Golden Age
DC because Marvel barely had anything worth revisiting outside of the Invaders members and Howling Commandos
>Silver Age
Marvel wins since they had Kirby at his peak creative output
>Bronze Age
tie
>80s
DC because it hosted more impactful aspects of that era (CoIE, Alan Moore, Gaiman, TDKR, etc)
>90s
DC because it avoided Liefeld and company, plus there were cool books around (Deathstroke, Starman, Legion, the Vertigo line)
>00s
I'd go with DC because Infinite Crisis was an actual attempt at rebuilding the DCU whereas everything past Avengers Disassembled was a destruction of the status quo to force writers to come up with new stories
>10s
Is this even a question?
>>

>To take a break from company wars and shitposting, what is your favorite series/character from each of the big two?

DC
>Batman

Marvel
>Daredevil

I used to really like Wolverine too, and this is actually what made me prefer DC over Marvel. The point of Wolverine, and why he had so much potential as a character is that you didn't really know his backstory.

Sure, you knew he had been a part of the Weapon X project; you knew he was Canadian, and you knew he was really old; but other than that you didn't know anything and neither did he.

You could have Wolverine stories where some dude comes up to Wolverine and be like "You killed my great-granddad in the Weimar Republic and I've been part of a century long vendetta to avenge him" and Wolverine is like "Really? I hung out in Germany in the 1920s?"

But then Marvel decided to write Wolverine: Origins because Fox said they were going to make a Wolverine Origins movie, and they completely destroyed Logan as a character (oh that's right his name isn't actually Logan it's James?!).

That seems rather petty to have that ruin a character for you.

I would probably be close to voting for Wolverine even though I don't tend to read comics for characters, he has some really good ones.
>>
>>79728456
Morrison then Whedon right after. Read Remender's Uncanny X-Force and Spurrier's X-Force. Don't bother with Claremont, dated and boring as fuck despite what /co/ will tell you.
>>
>>79729747

It isn't petty.

They took all of the mystery and narrative potential out of a great character.

I'm sure at some point Marvel will retcon it and the whole James Howlett thing will be like "didn't happen" and they will, hopefully, be people writing good Wolverine stories again.

Notice that I'm talking about Wolverine stories, not X-Men stories.

X-Men has only really been great under Claremont and then Morrison, but I don't really have a massive problem with memories-Logan in X-Men itself. It's Wolverine stories I'm talking about.
>>
>>79729997
>Whedon
>Good

>Claremont

Whatever you do; do NOT listen to this anon.
>>
DC's universe/multiverse just is more interesting and fits together better. I prefer individual stories in Marvel, but as soon as more than a dozen different heroes/villains come together it becomes really offputting.
>>
>>79723173
Fantastic. Don't believe what you hear. DC has always had at least 5 amazing books going at any given time and what more could you ask for? Not to mention Multiversity was god tier and I looved the callbacks to all the previous events, bringing them back into continuity for potential storytelling.

>Omega Men
>Midnighter
>Sheriff of Babylon (but this is Vertigo so...?)

Martian Manhunter and Justice League 3001.
>>
>>79730217
This is something that I've never thought of, but actually rings true once I think about it. Marvel's characters don't mesh well. At all. Mutants, Inhumans, the FF, the space races, then the characters in the OG Avengers...its just really nonsensical in a way DC isn't.
>>
>>79730776

I think Snyder and Cappula's run on Batman is pretty good so far too.
>>
>>79730776

Martian Manhunter

Martian Manhunter
Justice League
JL 3001
>>
DC because all of the great non-superhero comics they made in the silver & golden age
>>
I like Marvel street level, x-men(pre Morrison), magic, and cosmic stuff. I like DC's obscure shit, vertigo shit, JL related characters, and most of all, Superman.
>>
>>79730776
It really depends on how high you set the bar for god ongoing superhero comics, but the DC line as a whole has been pretty damn good since the New52, even if it came at the cost of their entire continuity.

You can't tell me the three JL books out right now aren't at the very least passable, of course comparing it to preNew52 JL books or Avengers. Same thing goes for most of the line, and there's standouts like the ones you mentioned, MM, JL3k, Batman.
>>
>>79731076
Snyder can't write worth a shit, but I'll check out Martian Manhunter and Just league 3001.
>>

DC 80's-90's
2000-2016 is like picking between a shit sandwich and a shit smoothie.
>>
>>79731140
If you're down for some more straight up cape, JLA is pretty damn good, it sorta feels like a Authority story with JL characters and scale. I also thoroughly enjoy Cyborg, Swam Thing and Constantine, Cyborg feels pretty fresh and actually makes Cyborg looks pretty interesting, Swamp Thing is a straight up old school horror comic with great art and Constantine is a halfway point between classic Hellblazer and that neutered spell slinging shit we were getting earlier.
>>
I read both DC and Marvel. Enjoy aspects of both/dislike some things of both. I also read Image, Valiant, Darkhorse, and pretty much anything else that has a good story, good characters, good art, etc.

Why does it always have to be company wars here?
>>
>Golden Age
DC

>Silver Age
Marvel. No contest.

>Bronze Age - 80's
Marvel. Born Again, KLS, Claremont X-Men, Stern - Byrne Cap, Gruenwald Cap, Alpha Flight, Frank Miller Daredevil, Elektra: Assassin, Moonshadow, God Loves Man Kills, Conway Spidey

Marvel

>90's - 2016
I would say Marvel because it's more memorable. Yet, there's a handful amounts of shitty comics.

Because unlike the movies, comic books are sometimes given talented writers who manage to make a storyline/character actually interesting and compelling to read month to month.
