>western cartoons still reference Speed Racer as a joke

Jesus fucking christ. Will they ever move on to something else?
>>
Does anyone even remember Speed Racer outside of the criminally underrated Wachowski movie?
>>
That Dexter's Lab episode gets a pass but that's about it.
>>
>>79708373
It's a pretty fun read.
>>
>>79708373
When I saw that in the theater, I was 20 minutes late and missed the absurd exposition at the beginning and HOLY SHIT, I enjoyed the movie way more than on subsequent viewings.

The problem is the beginning of the movie establishes the fact that the kid whose name is SPEED RACER really likes speed and racing, and that he suffered the tragic loss of his older brother which is referenced later in the film.
>>
>>79708373

I vaguely remember watching it on Cartoon Network in the mid 90s, but I don't remember anything about it other than the car having special abilities.

Fairly Odd Parents probably did my favourite parody of it

>Timmy driving through an insane race avoiding Racer X at all costs and nearly killing him a few times

>not-Racer X drives alongside Timmy's car

>'PLEASE JUST PULL OVER! I JUST WANNA' TALK!'

>the kid whose name is SPEED RACER really likes speed and racing, and that he suffered the tragic loss of his older brother

It literally took me until just this moment to get that his brother's name was Rex because he wrecks his car.
>>
I own the movie where he races some giant train-car thing that's staffed with a diabolical crew that employs all sorts of gadgets to make the other racers crash.
>>
>>79708433

I don't particulary mind the slow beginning because even the exposition is visually interesting. That said, the movie could have used to trim some of its fat.
>>
>>79708343
How old is Speed Racer?

Manga in 1966, adapted into the now iconic anime into 1967.

Trivia: A young Yoshitaka Amano worked on production of Speed Racer. He was 15.
>>
>>79708645
Isn't Amano famous for his Final Fantasy work and Angels Egg?

Everyone starts somewhere. Heck, depending on who you ask, some would say he's more famous for his Tatsunoko character design: Gatchaman, Hutch the Honeybee, Tekkaman, Casshern, Hurricane Polymar, Yatterman and all of Time Bokan... He was the one who invented these characters.
>>
>>79708700
He's a great character designer. His work is one of Japan's best
>>
Probably because Speed Racer was the first anime a lot of people watched.
>>
>Eastern cartoons still reference black and white cartoon shorts from the 20s
>>
>>79708700

I realized that the only problem I have with his work is when he's drawing someone else's characters. His original stuff is a thing to be seen but... that damn pale-as-ghost Superman for instance is going to give me nightmares. Same with his take on Nomura's FF characters, his style just doesn't work with them, at least not for me.
>>
>/a/utists don't realize how irrelevant their medium is
>>
>>79709667
Western animation references Speed Racer, and this somehow demonstrates that anime is irrelevant?
>>
>>79709558
His style is really beautiful though.
I like his boxart work for VI.
>>
>>79709728
Anime is so irrelevant that the only anime anyone gives a shit about is 50 years old.
>>
>>79709769
Well, even if Western animators happened to think that it's irrelevant, it doesn't actually make it irrelevant. Not that they actually think so, seeing as how much anime has influenced Western animation.
>>
>>79709769
Anime influences animation so much nowadays though.
>>
>>79709798

And without western animation, anime wouldn't exist.

Only redeeming thing about the show.
>>
>>79708343
You make it sound as if it's still a go-to reference point. Speed Racer references are rare and fleeting nowadays, because most of the people who watched that show live don't work on shows like that anymore, and most of the ones who watched reruns as kids don't give a damn. They have essentially moved on.

Now, if you were talking about Sailor Moon, or Dragonball Z, you'd have a point.
>Cardcaptor Sakura references never

What'd you guys think of the series on Nicktoons?
>>
>>79708373
I remember watching it late night cartoon network

I remember thinking it was pretty boring
>>
>>79708485
Also because Rex means King (he's better than Speed) and Rex Racer's pseudonym is RACERR EX (Racer X/Racer, Rex). He's also Racer X because he's the significant variable affecting the outcome of each race.

They had fun localizing Rex.

>>79708373
My dad had it on vhs. The op song was pretty catchy when I was little.

What cartoon referenced it?

The last Speed Racer reference I remember is the Dexter's Lab episode that parodied it.
>>
>>79713438
Gravity Falls had Spritle and Chim-Chim appear in the back seats of a car for a few frames in one of the last two episodes.
>>
I didn't even know Speed Racer was an anime until years later.
>>
They reference dragon ball, pokemon and naruto 100 times more though
