i remember when i first saw the previews for this show i said to myself;

WOW. that main character looks horrible. this show will suck.

cut to today and this is honestly one of my favorite cartoons to come out in the last decade. its doing an excellent job with its pacing.

I like the show, but I don't think season 2 is really the same show as season 1. I like both, but they seem like different shows.

I hope we get some hardcore slice of life stuff once the whole gem cluster / redemption stuff is over.

Peridot working at big donut
Jasper bullying people at the gym
Lapis teaching swimming
Yellow diamond running for president

It'd be great

The character interactions and the OST genuinely keep me coming back... I don't know what to make of it, but it is what it is.

>>
>>79162080
I like them both.
S2 has lot more drive in the plot and we just run on well-established characters, so nothing really comes out of left field because we can tell what is and is not typical for them.
I like this development, really. It's about how everything moves, everything changes and nothing lasts forever.
We saw the life of an innocent child, but this Steven just doesn't exist anymore.
He is still Steven, but he will never be without the knowledge of his heritage again.
He will never be the kid the adults have to worry about again.
Now he must learn to be the shield to protect everyone.
And slow as it may be, this shift is coming.
He leads more and more, learns about his Gems and about the history of the rebellion.
His day to defend the earth is coming up.

>>79162382
Not sure how much of that we are going to get.

Hm. I don't know.
It is a weapon system, as far as Peri andYD described it, though.
>destroying earth for a geo-weapon (as in to have one, not to have used one)
So it does not destroy earth like a bomb and then has served its purpose. It would probably become a sort of Deathstar platform or something like that.
So I'm not sure it works like those small shard clusters, but is a kind of superorganism, like a living ship. Not quite cognisant, but absolutely of a higher functionality than those zombified shards.

They will likely just go down there and disable the mechanism that feeds it, or try and shatter it in some way.
We really don't know much about how Clusters work in detail, though.

The characters are clearly different later than earlier in the series. Amethyst in Friend Ship isn't the same as before, Pearl in Log Date isn't the same as Pearl in Giant Woman, Garnet is tons more exposed in The Answer, Peridot and Steven are blatantly different from their introductions.

I really don't know where you got that idea from, it feels like you're describing the problems of a completely different series.
>>
>>79164054
I think what he discribes is that they encounter problems related to their hangups more than once.
As in, they don't have the artificial "fixing your problem" thing going you encounter a lot in cartoons where they have a problem come up, find a solution and then it's never talked about again.

Naturally that is not what happens in SU where their problems are related to their identity and the inherent insecurities they have dragged around for 6k years.
So of course you can't fix Pearl's hopeless attachment to Rose, you can't fix Amethyst's awareness of her own inadequacy and you can't fix Garnet's core beliefs about fusion.
>>
>>79163485
Well they said it is made of a million shards, right?

The shards aren't terribly large, so while the body it creates would be larger than the earth, the cluster could be puny compared to that kind of scale.
>>
>>79164484
Yes, yes.
But its functionality would be depending on how well it can be controlled and what kind of body it produces.
I mean, will it be an explosion of limbs? A rapidly expanding mass that quickly flickers out of existence so you can use it again?
A giant war machine that just tears earth apart as an afterthought?
>>

It's a pretty great show. Even ignoring episodic crying and shitty schedules, it's my new favorite show. Amethyst starts out as a lazy slob and comedic relief, but is now a sad sack of emotions and unwanted birth, combined with being the only Crystal Gem that's actually a crystal gem. Pearl seems like a neat and orderly Mom but as we see, she's a neurotic and PTSD ridden mess of gay salt. Garnet was first shown to be stoic and unbreakable but is actually two minds in one body that have to balance everything out, and is the de facto leader because Pearl is broken. Steven was at first a fat fuck who eats junk and can't do shit, but now he can summon his weapon at will, is eating better, and is constantly reminded he is neither human nor Gem, he is alone. Honestly its the only currently airing show that doesn't keep to a status quo, unlike the Adventures of Betacai and Finn the Cucking. The characters change and I think it has to do with how they draw episodes a year in advance. I wouldn't be surprised if the way Sugar does things is she writes the ending first, then builds up to the end with her arcs.

All we need is weekly episodes man.

>>79166023

He's salty because Rose and her handful of defective Gems repelled wave after wave of elite soldiers with nothing but a bunch of scraps.

I just realized what makes SU tick

It's an ongoing story with little room to skip episodes as compared to the other CN shows with are self contained comedies with random progression (Mordecai's dating life, Penny's new form, AT in general)

Can you imagine if Sardonyx arc wasn't made as a Bomb?
>>

>>
>>79162424
Eh? What's their argument? I just caught up and I like those eps.

My only complaint is that I'm not fond of the couple of them that have literally zero supernatural elements. The ones that look like they came from a completely normal cartoon about a town, like that one where the donut girl has to- oh my gosh- sing at a concert! I like my slice of life with at least a little weird shit.
>>
>>79161425
That was the main point. Like a few people said, Season 1 was just world building. It was just done to introduce characters and areas for the second season. So yeah, it does feel like a completely different show in Season 2 but I enjoy it and I like this way of storytelling

To be honest, for me, it's new designs>>>old designs. I watched episodes when they were on but I never paid attention to what episode it was or when a new episode came on, I just went 'SU is on? Eh, I'll watch it for a bit' mainly because the pilot, to me at least, was very ugly.

I think that's what draws me more to SU than the other SU shows. While we complain about 'Oh this episode is a filler episode!', it really isn't. An episode that may seem like filler will probably have a hint to an upcoming revelation. I think Sadie's Song is a big example of this with the song. That's gonna come into play probably at the season 2 finale.

No? Unless you mean how Rebecca Sugar literally boarded some of the best episodes of Adventure Time, then yeah, it's just like those episodes of Adventure Time. But from the very beginning, this show has rejected the episodic, "random" nature that Adventure Time usually maintains.

Kat Morris boarded the first episode, and I don't think she works as a storyboarder anymore. That's why Connie's design "changed," because only Kat drew her like that. I guess they tried it in An Indirect Kiss and abandoned it for a cuter, but strikingly less realistic Connie.

Anon, you have to admit how awful looking the early episodes were, especially Laser Light Cannon.

Things really don't need to be skipped, but those early episodes were very generic and dragged on.
Tiger Millionaire was really the first one where they started to figure shit out. Maybe a bit of Cat Fingers and Frybo, but those were also just kinda average.

The one thing I miss from Season 1 is the relaxed, melancholy atmosphere which gave the earliest episodes their unique tone, and initially piqued my interest in the show. Because the arc of S1 was driven by Steven's growing awareness and maturity regarding the gems, and his existence in general, the stories we saw were not colored by the narrative burden they now carry. Small interactions between characters and odd, magical events could happen without being seen as part of some larger epic. It makes perfect sense, of course, that we as viewers can't go back to the days of innocence, just as Steven can't go back to his carefree life of wandering Beach City while the gems handle the responsibilities of their past. However, despite marking a trajectory towards more complex and nuanced and exciting things, it feels like a loss regardless. The main theme is the clearest example of this shift--for all of Season 2's energy, there's something to be said for the quieter, more personal tone of the original.

CN was advertising the show with that "if every pork chop were perfect..." scene. The clip looked stupid and I avoided it, expecting it to get canceled.
One day I couldn't find the remote so I just said fuck it and tried it out because it was on. I heard the theme song and the show captured my soul. It was so nice sounding it gave me goosebumps. It's my favorite cartoon currently airing.
>>
>>79169461
I didn't expect The Test to be such a damn good episode. But hearing Amethyst saying "We're bad at this" and the Gems ALL admitting that they're trying their best, but they don't know what they're doing when raising Steven...damn, it made all three of them better characters instantly.

I imagine it's even more sad watching that scene if you're a parent.
>>
I remember when I first saw the previews for this show I wanted Steven to pluck out his excoriated skin of desolation and cover his muscles with metempsychotic mustard upon which the mired hatreds of ten thousand sins have accumulated due to mankind's unpredictable stupidity.

Now I desire his flesh to be boiled in desolation poop and his brains scalded by the waters of time.

1. learn to use the enter key
2. I think we'll probably be returning to that quieter tone for a while once the Cluster is dealt with.
Peridot needs to become acclimated to her new everyday life, Lapis may or may not be part of that, and there should be a time between them stopping the Cluster and YD realizing she didn't get a giant space monster.

The whole underlying message of the show is that you can get through to almost anyone through patience, understanding, friendship, and kindness.

... finding someone who Steven CAN'T redeem is something you've got to save for a major antagonist like Yellow Diamond.

YD needs to deliver a major blow to the CGs... something like wiping Beach City off the map or shattering one of the redeemed gems... something so completely unforgivable that even the ever-kind, ever-patient, ever-forgiving Steven Universe would look up to his surviving friends and family and say

"I hate her."

The change in tone as the series progresses isn't all too bad. That just means you can treasure the comfy episodes of S1 that much more, knowing things will probably never be the same for Steven.

I expect S3 to include the HW gems in its opening, so at least we can look forward to some comfy redemptions, yeah?
>>
>>79172970
Not really, Ian and Matt just tend to answer lots of dumb questions on twitter
>>
Hypothetical.

The cluster is ready to unleash itself and destroy the Earth. At just the right time Steven makes contact with it and ends up having a 1-on-1 conversation with it, delaying its final destruction and getting into its mind. The whole thing becomes a very "scorpion and the frog" scenario where the cluster is just carrying out its natural (even if destructive) duty and Steven is the naturally benevolent force putting itself at risk humoring its situation.

Destruction breeds creation regardless of the hardship it brings. No one is perfect and no one is 100% good or evil. Even chaotic forces like the cluster have their place in the grand scheme of things. This is the very philosophy upon which this show is built and I'd like to see it tackle this "if every porkchop were perfect" mentality more and more. I believe there is a greater threat at hand that the Crystals, Homeworld, Earth and who knows how many others are going to have to come together to overcome.
>>
>>79173046

Even so, it'd be fairly cheap. At this point we can probably grasp the formula from now on:

>new gem arrives
>is a villain for a while
>Steven uses the fabled Talk no Jutsu >eventually there's a new Crystal Gem
>>
>>79168062
>>79167698
Actually she still works on the show, just not as a boarder: She's the show's Storyboard Supervisor, she's one of the two Supervising Directors (specifically for Raven & Paul and Florido & Zuke episodes) since mid-season 2, and she's one of the show's story writers (along with Rebecca, Ian before he left, Matt Burnett, and Matt's ska-loving partner in crime Ben Levin)

Also while my first instinct was to assume that kat boarded the onion scene, I think Aleth Romanillos did that scene: Compare Steven in that scene to steven in the scenes in arcade mania where they're at the cave at the start and when they're talking the giant foot, and Contrast to the scenes where steven asks for the bits in both LLC and Cat Fingers
>>
>>79173046

See, I think Lapis is going to subvert this.
She's already so far gone off the deep end that it's going to be hard to give her some form of emotional redemption from the homeworld gems.
IMHO, I think she's gonna die, and she's going to serve as a lesson for Steven that he can't save everybody.
>>
>>79173153
I think if they add new Crystal Gems, they're gonna cap it with Peridot, Lapis, and Jasper. It would be character overload if they added even more characters. The Homeworld Gems work as a foil and companion group to the original three, with each of them potential filling a role of one of the original three.

Peridot & Amethyst are the short, crude, and unintentionally abrasive ones.

Lapis & Pearl are the lithe, gentle caretakers with dark sides and emotional issues.

Jasper & Garnet are the tall, stern warriors types who eventually show a more affectionate side to Steven.

>>
>>79173836

>>
>>79173807
Well, I imagine the problem is that you'd just be combining gem energy and gem energy.
It wouldn't make for a new gem at all in that case when the "mother" tried to give birth.

Steven is a combination of gem energy and growing organic mass. So it is different for him.

Actually, taking the energy from one gem and giving it to another is kinda what I'm thinking "harvesting" might be.
If that's the case, the implications of gem rape are even more interesting.
>>
>>79173904
we never quite see what the actual process of gem creation entails. We know it involves excavating earth, using big machines that look like virus models and then... that's it
>>
>>79174044
The guide to the crystal gems basically says that the injectors cum into the holes they dig and the cum inseminates minerals in the earth. Pearls obviously form differently
>>
>gems are gender neutral
>ian keeps referring all gems as she

Neutral my ass.

>>79173919

Well given what little we know of gem biology and magic and shit.

One gem could grow an injector (read: penis) and magic/energize the liquid inside of injectors.

They would then stick their injector into the other Gem's kindergarten (read: vagina), which also contains the necessary magic/energy for gems to grow.

The dual energies would grow, gestate over a set time, then a new gem would form, probably a fusion of the two gems. So is Booby and Laughire did this it would pop out a baby Garnet.

But hey, that would require Gems to have emotions and be capable of love, and only defective gems have feelings. These Gems are gathered up, gassed, and then harvested to make ships and weapons.

>>79174044

>>79161205
Honestly, the pacing is the absolute WORST part.

It doesn't need to go full anime, but in a way it has.
Garnet has a shitload of character development for a person who's only fault is keeping a grunge that was equally shitty on Pearl for being a pity party.

In a way, it feels like Garnet has no duality at all, but she's literally three different characters at the same time. Sensitive about fusion when she wants, but will take it at any time with no sense of repercussions at any moment when she wants. Dismissive, fueled by instinct, and apathetic one day, but freaking Late Show Arnold Shortman in how sage-like her wisdom is.

While Amethyst is just there at this point. She was a source of intentional naivety clashing with the experiences and yearnings she's gained, but Peridot overwrites her role.
Now she does all the stuff Steven would do as an expert of the Season 1 Crystal Gems, not the Season 2 ones.

Pearl has a straight up incomplete arc where the entirety of the FriendShip bomb could be completely ignored.
>>
>>79175263
Nope.
The agendered stuff has only been confirmed via the crew on social media.

I don't know about english but in spanish theere are objects that are refered as femenine, even when they are not, for example: La silla es muy incomoda.

I saw SEVERAL episodes from Season 1 and just could not get into it. I really tried to give it a chance but I thought the episodes were either dull or focused away from things that were much more interesting (like the Gems). But mostly thought I was kind of perturbed by the way Steve was regarded, the level of concern and support he received from the Gems seemed unrealistic. Or at least, it reminded me of pre-K entertainment, which holds a greater focus on trying to build up the self esteem of the viewers.

As so I thought Steven was like 5 years old and was surprised to find he was much older than that. He didn't behave like a 12 year old nor did the Gems treat him like one, they coddled and condescended to him like someone much younger so their relationship didn't feel realistic and the disconnect between their behavior and ages was enough to put me off. It was weird. I would have forgiven it and liked Steven more if he was 5, doing cute 5 y/o things but he wasn't. He's a lot better in season 2. He's got more of a backbone and the Gems regard him better.

Someone once described it as the fantasy of what a sibling relationship is like instead of the reality of it and I agree.

Never? They'll delay until spring and then SU will be added to the spring cancellation to make way for CN's new line-up in June.

>The whole underlying message of the show is that you can get through to almost anyone through patience, understanding, friendship, and kindness.

So it's Undermeme, the cartoon?
>>
is SU going to end at Season 2? Seems like a waste if so.

But I'm not sure how I will feel by the end considering how long it might take to actually get there.

I need more corrupted Gems getting bubbled/rehabilitated.
>>
>>79162448
By definition they would be homosexual, since there is no other gender to be attracted to. That is a weird happenstance, would it be homosexual to be genderless and be attracted to your own species of genderless creatures? Is it also true for transformers?
>>
>>79178711
Nope, season 3 was confirmed a long time ago. No word on if there are plans for a 4th, but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it

Battered and fried.

Because, unlike Gems, Namekians are living biengs able of reproduction on their own. (Vomiting up eggs). Otherwise it's the same deal, he is genderless or agender and just uses he pronouns.

Of course DBZ never talks about this because they have more important things to do, like saving the universe and stuff.

>>79161205
Degeneracy the cartoon.
>>
>>79174143
>that would require Gems to have emotions and be capable of love, and only defective gems have feelings. These Gems are gathered up, gassed, and then harvested to make ships and weapons.

Holy shit no wonder this show rubbed me the wrong way, at last I truelly see! only degenerate progressives hold this kind of special snowflake victimhood syndrome.

It's no wonder /co/mblr enjoys this shit show.
>>
>>79179822
That and beating the shit out of each other and training to gain new gucking powers.

That's how it should be done instead of shoving this lgbtbbq gender nonsense.

I fucking hate liberals.
>>
>>79161205
anyone know where I can get a bathing suit like that? one piece with some on the leg instead of just fucking briefs underwear style
>>
I still hate it as much as I hated it the day it came out.

I just think all of the character designs are ugly and I'm unable to move past that. I know this show is supposed to be a deconstruction it's genre and in doing so it's also supposed to be a commentary on homogeneity but it still looks butt-ugly and I don't like it. I don't like the writing and I feel like everything the writers are trying to say is ideological preaching shoved in my face and the whole show just rubs me the wrong way

Amethyst is going to get a lot of focus in future episodes based on some of the leaked episode names.

It's in the damn picture, m8. Good luck seeing it without a soup account, though.
>>
Does anyone else find the cluster an underwhelming threat?
I mean sure in their position it would be, but we all know it isn't a -real- threat because no way in hell the writers are gonna have it blow up the planet.
>>
So we got the steven bomb, so I guess this means now we get another hiatus right? Dont get me wrong I enjoy this show, but the amount of hiatus' that rebecca and the crew take make it hard for me to believe they take their own shit seriously.

why is it that other cartoons keep on trucking during the holidays, yet rebecca decides
"oh, summer, time for a break!"
"oh, thankgiving! time for a break!"
"oh christmas! time for a break!"
"oh! having trouble tying my shoes this morning time for another hiatus!!!"

like seriously, get your shit together
>>
>>79180084
might be more intimidating when we see it.

It's not Rebecca Sugar's fault, CN is responsible for the schedule of all their shows.
>>
>>79180109
its entirely their fault, have you not paid attention to her tumblr? she literally stopped the episodes just because she was having so much fun during the summer and wanted to stay on vacation for another month, SHE announces her productivity halts. maybe do some research before you spout out answers. CN does control a certain portion of the schedule, but rebecca can out and say they wont make a new ep for 3 months and cartoon network just has to deal with it and run reruns.
>>
>>79180109
also part 2, cartoon network doesnt give a shit about christmas and thanksgiving, they just want their shows and want them on time, thats all rebecca
