So I just started reading Homestuck. Does it get any better?

No, but if you keep reading 100s of pages you'll get "Stockholm syndromed" into liking it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effort_justification

>If I wasted so much time on this crap, it must be good!

Alternatively you can play Undertale for the same shitty writing and lack-of-effort art.
>>
why?
>>
>>79153945
No
>>
>>79153945
Honestly, it gets better
but then it gets worse after a long while
You'll be pulled in by the creative world building a special powers the kids will have
and if you're an autist, you'll love the trolls

but even that isn't enough to make the author's writing good
>>
>>79153945
It gets better, slowly at first but then it accellerates getting more and more and more fantastic until it plateaus at the start of act 6, then when you near the most recent part it starts to go downhill
>>
man, I miss enjoying homestuck. It meant so much to me for four years of my life. It was a defining trait of me and changed the direction of my life permanently and now I just don't care anymore.

I care that I don't care, but homestuck doesn't seem as amazing to me as it used to. I'm not even looking forward to hiveswap because I know it's never going to come out

>>
>>79154490
Anon, make another one...in the shape of a dick. That would be...accurate.
>>
>>79153945
Maybe. It definitely changes a lot, over and over. Understand that the comic is one long experiment where the author tries out different ways of fucking around with his audience. The earlier parts were run interactively like one of those forum quests. He abandoned that relatively early on but still kept his style of taking ideas from the fans and twisting them to his own ends. Over time the demographic he was writing for changed from what it originally was and then maybe he gazed too long into the abyss.
>>
>>79154490
this chart is damn accurate, but what's the middle dip in act 6 supposed to represent? I can't tell because act 6 is all one big blur to me

>>
>>79154991
No. Sleuth is long and garbage and unfunny just as Homestuck The Final Boss is almost 50% of the whole story.

One joke every 80 pages. Thousands of pages. Pointless.

Homestuck is just that X 10.

Literally LITERALLY every single human being you will find calling Problem Sleuth "short" and "concise" are people who read Homestuck. No other sane person would call that shit "short".

It gets good, then it gets ok, then it turns in to dogshit with the occasional good moment. The best part of the entire thing was enjoying the wild ride with the fandom, while it was still good and active. I wouldn't bother drudging through it anymore.

This is coming from somebody who has over 2GB of fanart still floating about on my computer.
>>
>>79153945
First of all, if you are here because of the hype: The fandom is horrifying, half of the fanbase skipped integral parts, only to latch on to shipping. This might have created a feeling that it's a completely characterdriven comic, which i false.
The coolest part for me were the timetravel shenanigans, understanding the origin of characters and of course the metastory.
To be honest the non-linear, sometimes downright random build up made looking through this harder than it should be. Sometimes it feels like a 4-year old just mashes storythreads together like hotwheel cars and half way through remembers that there's a Peanut Butter sandwhich under his bed he left there last week, so he throws all the toys out of the window and crawls under his bed only to find his sister's diary there and attempts to read from it only to remember he can't read yet. You feel this metaphor went out of hand? This is how reading Homestuck feels like, I am not shitting you, unlike our metaphorical 4-year old, who will shit himself in kindergarten next week in the most embarrasing moment of his young life.
It has random rambling with mild amusement value, sudden switch of characters, but an amazing frame- and metastory.
In the beginning there is no particular part that makes you think "LOL THIS SHIT IS FUNiES I GOTTA MAKE A YOUTUBE POOP OF THIS ON MY VINE"
It's subtle, snarky, sometimes absurd interactions buried in between relatively normal convos. It recreates the feeling of chatting with a witty friend, who feels a tad smarter than you but genuinely wants to crack a joke. It creates a fun, snarky background radiation to the first half. Picking up all the puzzle pieces on the way is half of the fun.
>>79154490
I like that part of your chart where you apparently traveled back in time in the middle of act 5, act 1 only to enjoy it less the second time around. I don't even think your graph is invalid, I just think this timetravelshit is a legit scenario with this comic.
>>
>By now, we've observed patterns for each character. Jade is the one who breaks many of them. We were to expect she would have another irritating modus. Instead she has all these fun and silly ones based on games. Because she is FUN AND SILLY. This helps broadcast that fact to readers. It's amazing how much I'm teaching you about characterization so far.
Im hungry Andrew
>>
>>79156230
Poor Jade was designed to be unlikable. Her curse was that her unlikability even affected the author, thus becoming a secondary background character.

One of the problems of this comic is how it highlights Dave's issues but it completely ignores Jade's.
>>
I just cracked the homestuck code

Thief of Light - Steals the spotlight and narrative
Heir of Breath - Fucks your mom and gf
Knight of Time - Unending lust to fuck any lifeform
Witch of Space - Fills some space up on the ending flash
Seer of Light - Doesn't see shit
Knight of Blood - Cuckolding, channels the energies of deities like Finn and Mordecai to guide his way into despair and love depression
Sylph of Space - Background Prop
Thief of Life - Makes you realize you wasted three years of your life for reading this shitty comic
>>

>>79157949
homestuck is in general about self-actualization and the fight against a deterministic universe. It's the idea that life gives us a path to follow and a role to play. How rejecting circumstance is a part of growing up but so is coming to accept your own nature and finding and fulfilling the person you are most meant to be.
>>
>>79155869

I mean, along with other factors such as reading the comic serially vs. archivally, it has always been an experimental piece, by its nature there's going to be some really high points mixed in with some low ones. And even then it's all subjective, some of it due to the fact that all the connecting context hasn't been fully revealed yet.

Yeah, despite him saying the kids were aracial, he went ahead and defined trickster jane as being Caucasian. Hussie made the solid, concrete decision to try and do that in all seriousness. The fandom FREAKED OUT and he changed it to Peachy like pic related. He pussied out, plain and simple. Pussying out of things is fine, but when you can't even submit a web comic page without cracking, you have issues.

Admonishing those who wish to maintain non-white headcanons for characters. Or those disappointed to see Trickster Jane with skintone. Or anyone really. There was not any coherent ‘TAKE THAT’ going on here.

At least that was not the intent. I can see how it would appear that is what I wished to communicate, but it is not. If that is an interpretation that will commonly persist I’d rather just ditch the joke. Or at least tone it way down, which I did.

Pure fucking backpeddling. Only later on does he fluff it with some "But it's to stop HARASSMENT" so he doesn't sound like such a wimp in the face of teenage girls.

>>
>>79157890
I think I can male peace with the fact that most of what I thought Homestuck was was really an illusion created by the music team and a few neat plot twists. That way the decline is less disappointing, since instead of getting worse Homestuck was always this bad but masked by a few strong elements.

It also has a lot to do with the fandom, even when hussie stopped taking suggestions officially he still used the fans as a soundboard for the rest of the comic (for better or worse)

plus, fans had, and I guess still have, a habit of filling in plotholes with elaborate theories, if it weren't for that the flaws in homestuck would feel a lot more severe

Undertale is better than Homestuck because it ends and doesn't go so long the author not only runs out of ideas but gains radically different opinions and spends the last part of the comic ranting about social justice issues.

undertale isn't actaully a lot like homestuck despite people constantly pushing that comparison, homestuck is way, way wordier

>>
>>79162817
Undertale and Homestuck is a good comparison, mostly because the creator made so much music for and was inspired by Homestuck. Here's the main difference: Undertale was a thoroughly enjoyable couple of hours and Homestuck has been going on for seven years if you assume Hussie really will end on the date he has planned. A creative work stretched over that long of a period of time has all the problems you'd expect.

It... depends. Homestuck has some similar characters and humor to undertale, and both enjoy playing with video game conventions as well as the fourth wall and their mediums. On the flip side Undertale is concise, streamlined and well crafted, whereas homestuck is bloated, poorly put together, and runs out of steam about half way through. Still an enjoyable read, if only the for the early parts(if you can stomach the pacing) but I don't know that I'd recommend it for everyone. Read a bit. If you act 1's pacing doesn't turn you off immediately, then go a little further. If you're not hooked by act 3 or 4 then stop, because that's about the best it gets. Act 6 is a god damn train-wreck, but pieces of it are salvageable, so if you're very invested or just curious, then go all the way to the end.

No-one deserves a happy ending except for john anymore. It's almost like when you have a cast of fucking 20 characters and flip between them like a fighting game character select screen it's hard to hold on to any emotional investment. Like I dont even remember who Rose is or what she's into or cares about anymore. She's still "there" but who the fuck cares.

John seems to be the only person getting any sort of catharsis and it's just bread and butter delicious Campbell arc stuff for him anyway. He better wake up from a dream that he fell asleep at his computer playing a shitty video game and go for a picnic with his dad or something.
>>

>>79164728

>>
>>79164670

It's not that he's gay that ruined the character, it's that Dave falls into an introspective slump and never really gets out of it. He lacks basically any of the traits that made me like him as a character now and he just sits around and makes other people feel awkward or philosophize about his inadequacy and fears. Like, I get it, him and dirk, two sides of a coin, but the point that should make dave good is he overcomes all that shit, not succumbs to it, and it's WAY too late in the story to be pulling this sort of character arc shit if he's going to recover from it and become his old self tempered by new experiences.
>>
>>79164629
Your first mistake was entering a Homestuck thread without being caught up. Read it and form your own opinion; maybe you won't be as bitter and jaded as many of us are.
>>
>>79164751
Here's what he planned for us.

Davekat is endgame.
Karezi and other oldfag ships happen in the dreambubbles.

Everyone is happy and also no one gives a fucking shit about the story anymore.
>>
>>79164763
I feel you, anon. Except for the never really gets out of it part simply because that's the point where we left off, he could spring back after getting that rant off his chest for all we know. Dave dropped his cool kid facade for once, and while it could have been handled better, I think it was bound to happen eventually. I'm with you and hoping that this rut doesn't continue forward though.

Who the fuck is happy with that? Dreambubbles aren't just an awful consolation prize, there a way for him to not commit to anything, plus they're a horrible thing in the first place. Those people are doomed to remain in purgatory together, hooray.
>>
>>79164845

The thing is he's dropped the facade before, too, and those were great character moments. This last, large extended bout is just a long-winded dime-show about how he hasnt really gotten over any of his shit.
>>
>>79164783
But maybe just maybe Hussies pulls a Portal 2/Harry Potter ending that just makes everything better. Pls. pls...
>>
>>79164629
dave's arc doesn't go the way you want, it stops being about all that time travel hero stuff and he becomes a soapbox for social issues that he really shouldnt give a shit about but does because he's hussies mouthpiece

>>

>Tfw Davejade will never get the resolution it deserves
now that davesprite merged with nepeta its going to get shafted even further isnt it /co/
They didnt even have to be endgame, just fucking give them some closure instead of ignoring literally all their development together just to make dave super gay.
>>
>>79164931
It hasn't been about time travel hero stuff for four years and he's not going on a rant about society as much as he's wondering how he shaped his self-identity based on the Earth society he grew up in. He's lived with trolls for four years while Earth is dead, so he's questioning shit
>>
>>79164959

That may be true, but it doesn't make for a satisfying read. He never needed to "get over" his shit per se, but learn how to balance whatever was holding him up with being a helpful friend. And he's basically showing no signs of improving. Whatever, it's not my comic or anything, I just think it's shitty. Dave had enough little core/deep moments to justify his memery and massive personality/ego, so to strip all that away kind of just leaves an unfulfilling character to read about, especially when he was one of the heroic leads.
>>
>>79165053
It was never meant to be a prize, nor a hell. It's a purgatory made by Horrorterrors to try and preserve memories of failed players. They cannot grow, physically, but as pre-rec Vriska's shown, they can still change as people since they have all the time in the void to do what ever.
>>
>>79165071
