I think the problem with Old Steve was that it wasn't very consistent as to how fit he was. In Squadron Supreme, Nighthawk mentioned that he needed all of his focus to beat him, even though the fucker was way too old to be out in the field in the first place. Reading for continuity is doing it wrong, reading for characters getting into different situations and seeing how they uniquely handle it is fun.
Which is why I have no want to read Marvel until they give half of their staff the axe. It's not about writing good stories right now, it's about writing a book in between the inevitable next relaunch that will only lead to the same situation.
