How did gems evolve a fusion ability, and how are they even able to do it?

I think it started out as a beneficial relationship in pre-sentience gems, then those gems joining themselves through simultaneous shapshifting or reformation. But this seems half-assed.
>>
Their "bodies" are energy projections that they can consciously manipulate, it follows that two or more gems could cooperatively support one projection if they're appropriately synchronized.

Given that at least some gem classes have very little sense of individuality (as with Rubies), and that same-class fusion is the primary (if not only) type of fusion on Homeworld, it seems like fusion would be a fairly natural occurrence to have happened on accident. Just look at how easy it was for the three Rubies to fuse in The Answer, now imagine some incident far back in early gem history where a group of the same kind of gems were faced with an immediately urgent task that none of them could individually surmount. If they were in close proximity, assuming almost nonexistent individuality, then fusion would instinctively occur.
>>
>>79138536
But pre-sentience gems would have a huge amount of individuality, because they're wildly different in experience. And synchronisation would be pretty difficult then, wouldn't it?
>>
My question is how the fusions have names. On homeworld, fusion between two different gems types must not happen all that often since it's deemed 'unnatural' by gem society. So when a fusion between two different gems is formed (that as far as its two or more components are aware of has never been attempted) does the fusion automatically know it's name or does it create it's own? This has been bothering me ever since "The answer," and its overall not very important but I can't help but wonder.
>>
>>79138736

How do you know there was such a thing as pre-sentience gems?
>>
>>79138862
How else would they have come into existence? It seems unlikely that every gem would just from from a combination of chemicals and all have sentience. But if you're referring to the thought that gems would have a precursor, then that makes this thread a moot point
>>

>>

They are an organic, they do not sexually procreate and they are purpose-made.
Everything points towards an artificial race.
They are more likely the outcome of a race missing the foresight to formulate the laws of robotics than a naturally evolved race themselves.
Gems can't make more Gems out of themselves, so they can't have evolved as we would think normal.
They apparently began at sentience and formed armies for their conquests and their strip mining of planets.

>Evolve

The Gems are a post biological specifies based upon some heavy nano and femto technological manipulation.

They didn't evolve it, it was created. Gems are like hyper advanced quantum computers utilizing photon arrangements to create hard bodies that may interact with the physical world. Fusion is merely two quantum rigs working in parallel with one another.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transhumanism

Besides, most scientists believe that if we met Extra Terristrials they would probably be machines.

Biology is just one phase of sapient life, culture, and civilization.
>>
>>79139386

Nowhere in there did I say that you had to like it in order to not be a moron.
>>
>>79139290
I think they could procreate, but probably asexually, like an amoeba, growing their gem by consuming minerals and other gems until they split. The injection method is just more practical and controlled
>>
>>79139515

We've seen nothing to suggest that.
>>
>>79138048
Fusion only makes sense for military use since the combined force of multiple gem creates a more powerful composite gem. The purpose is fusion is essentially a way for gems to receive instant power ups in battle.

Now fusion being for love thats a load of crap.
>>
>>79139553
It fits what is given, and is equally logical.
>>
>>79139636
the problem here is they would need some kind of self replicating microscopic make up and since crystals have no fluids in them that makes it biologically incomprehensible. However if they could replicate their gems by using the same witchcraft that makes their bodies then yes. However the gems dont have a reason to reproduce mechanically when they can create their own species endlessly.
>>
>>79139730
But before they could create an endless amount manually, they would have to have some system to reproduce. Additionally, electrical or magnetic signals might play a role in early gem formation

Gems have no self replicating features so they were always incapable of reproduction. They were most likely created by a humanoid alien race for god knows why and abandoned, some of the gems were smart enough to figure out to how to create more gems and there we go.
>>

Except the fact they are inorganic, listen mate there is just no logical way an inorganic substance can become life because life needs fluid chemistry to even fucking exist, no liquids no life its that simple mate. Inorganic life would also be immortal and thus render natural selection and evolution pointless since the fucking things cant die.
>>
>>79140795
>life needs fluid chemistry
Then gems shouldn't exist at all, because they have no fluids in the states we have ween. But they are alive, as far as we can tell.
>>
>>79138048

Gems wouldn't have evolved in the way that we understand evolution- the mechanisms by which they even exist are incompatible with the conventions of the evolution of organic life.

>>
>>79141019
Isn't the underlying principle the same? Gems better suited give rise to other gems. Unless you're saying they can't reproduce, and we're created by something else. But that makes this entire discussion a moot point
>>
>>79141069
they could be something like skynet; created like robots by another race and took them over.

>>79140795
gems are magic. logic doesn't matter. natural selection has already produced thing biologically immortal, more or less. it's inherently arrogant to demand that the universe conform unilaterally to theories we developed with the insignificant sample size of Earth and our neighbors.
>>
>>79141455
It follows logically
Creates life>creator not retarded>creator has self preservation>Asimov implemented
>>
>>79141069

I have a few theories on that;

>Created by some outside species, either intentionally or not.
>Evolved naturally on their own, as a viable non-organic alternative to life. Other non-sapient gem life has been shown.
>Some freak universal accident created them in their current state, either as all types of gems or as one original form, with possibly Diamonds being the first.

>>
>>79140958
Yes meaning they are artificial life.
>>79141570
Gems are artificial alien crystals they are pure science and no magic at all, they look like magic because the technology that makes up their bodies looks like witchcraft to us.
>>
>>79141599
>>Some freak universal accident created them in their current state, either as all types of gems or as one original form, with possibly Diamonds being the first.
This seems interesting. Explain?
>>
>>79141264

They could just be the transhuman equivalent for that species. I'm inclined to think that the Diamonds (or just one of them, probably White) were originally scientists and members of a biological species, who managed to store their minds in artificially generated gems capable of projecting bodies. Then, they devised a method of growing more gems, with artificially induced sentience, to serve their purposes.
>>
>>79141573
Whatever aliens created the gems would also know exactly how to exterminate them if they tried to rise up against them, I mean the gems are hundreds of millenia old meaning an alien race millions of years ahead of humanity created them, the gem creators would be a godlike civilization by now.
>>
>>79141683
>Yes meaning they are artificial life.
No, that would mean that they aren't alive at all. By your own definition, something cannot be alive without fluid chemistry. Gems have no fluid chemistry there for, by your logic, gems aren't alive
>>
>>79141831
And gods would let their servants govern themselves and control galaxies?
>>
>>79141769

Something like this;

>Some gem/gems sitting around on Homeworld.
>Hit by some kind of high-energy, like a solar flare or gamma ray burst.
>Structure of gem/gems is just right that the energy gets trapped.
>Somehow coalesces into fully sapient, humanoid being, by freak coincidence.
>Gems born, either with multiple classes already existing, or starting with a base gem/gems that serve as their gods, once again possibly being Diamonds.
>>
>>79141950
We humans have a very earth centric idea of alive but its basically any matter that is animated and can perceive reality, meaning a rock that can see you and think is alive. So the gems are alive indeed, biological life is nothing more complex biological machines really, our brains are just flesh CPUS, our eyes Flesh cameras, our nerves flesh energy transporters and so on.
>>79142000
The race that made them is so advanced that what the gems are doing is baby shit to what they do now.
>Oh look they are starting to control the galaxy how cute :3
>>
>>79142254
The contradiction is strong. So gems are alive but couldn't be created on their own, because they don't meet the qualifications for life?
>>
>>79141831

Maybe the creators developed beyond normal concerns like the monolith makers from 2001, or maybe the first gems were the last creations of a dying civilization.

>>
That part is not disagreeable, and while there can be gem-like precursors. The species and resulting civilisation, especially in the hinted social structure seems to carry ominous tones of artificiality. Even something like this >>79146348 comes off as plausable an origin story as any other.

Gem's humanoid forms are projected out from the gems themselves. Garnet said something about them being hard light constructs or something. Fusion is just when gems meld their humanoid forms together, but the gem itself stays separate.
>>
>>79138770
>My question is how the fusions have names.
The Fusion probably comes up with it as its composite personality develops. In "The Answer", I don't think Garnet had a name yet, as Garnet was still finding out who she was.
>>
>>79146746
Yes.

You can start putting reasonable estimates on the processing and memory density of the gems themselves, if you assume that they are compact computing devices held together by covalent molecular bonds. (Assume diamondoid structural densities.) How they would implement optical computing to overcome thermal noise is unknown, let alone if it would even use such a method. There is also the issue of power supply and the exact nature of their other technologies.
>>

They might be amorphous solid like opaloids instead of actual crystals.

Maybe it's not meant to be taken literally word for word, but in in It Could've Been Great, Peridot says gems were 'designed' to be a space-faring race, so it's entirely possible something else created them
>>
>>79138048
How did Jasper know she needed to dance to fuse with a different gem when the only homeworld fusing we've seen is the Rubies just stacking and not dancing to fuse and inter-gem fusion seems to be unheard of with Homeworld. I mean, she recognizes Garnet is a fusion but she didn't even see hers or Opal's fusion.
>>
>>79149682
The reason is why Jasper was able to recognize Garnet as a fusion apparently is because non-fusion Garnets do not exist. Due to the strict caste system, it's only natural to assume that Jasper would know which gems belong where.

Besides I don't think that inter-gem fusion is unheard of in the Homeworld, especially after the Earth incident. Right now it's more like a taboo than anything.

It might be aliens, who experimented on metals to create in-organic life.

If I can remember, there was an episode about the gem gang exploring kindergarten place which it was some sort an factory to produce gems since that they apparently have an major flaw which they can't breed, due to them being in-organic beings.

And yet, one of these factories in Earth might suggest that it was created before human life started to emerge. Which it means that the aliens actually didn't made them to look human, but something else entirely. When they emerged, they thought it was the better and more adaptable structure. So, they made it them better after them and killed off the previous generation thus leaving the factories that produce the old gems abandoned and shut down.

And the fact that there are machines that are modeled after viruses might be designed after their creatures as same way as humans make their machines after our animals. So, it's possible that the aliens themselves might have an polygonal or geometric shapes after viruses and cells.
