The last thread had a surprisingly good run, have to say.
>>
>>79130452
I do, and I do.
None of that Slash/Yuri/Yaoi/SuperWhoLocke Tumblr-tier shit though.
I usually get into reading totally original stories, or stories that are written by authors who have a well rounded understanding of what they're wading into.
>>
>>79130570
Yeah it was really good, lots of discussion about various tropes and fics. Pretty surprising to see that actually

I once tried to write harry potte fanfiction when I was 14. I didn't know bether and made a Mary sue. She was so unlikable thay years later when I opened my ff.net account I cringed and killed her In the most horrible way. I haven't written it since

But I still read fanfiction. Mostly marvel. loki/sif is my guilty otp unfortunately
>>
Forgot to say in the last thread

To the author of >>79099126, it honestly wasn't as bad as you made it seem. I mean it's pretty bleedman-tier crossover shit, but it had some nice ideas.

6/10, would've been nice to see where it went.
>>
>>79131325
Yeah, Marvel is pretty much fanfiction at this point.

I didn't really do neither for a long while but am now writing one (The Helsa fic linked in the last thread), and actually have sort of avoided reading any since starting it since I'm afraid of picking up bad habits.

When I did skim through some fics, I noted that there seem to be certain expressions or phrases that I've never seen elsewhere but are ubiquitous in fanfics for that fandom. Like using "orbs" for eyes or referring to a person by the hair colour.

It's sort of interesting, and also gets old really fast.

People who read fanfics, are there such staple phrases in your fandoms too?
>>
>>79130452
I mentioned in the beginning of the last thread that me and my gf read it together. Really, just about random pairings that catch our eyes. We read a lot of FitzSimmons fanfics together, but we've been reading Edd x Marie, Venom Snake x Quiet, Chris x Ashley from Until Dawn, Batman x Catwoman, etc. Some of them are actually pretty good.

I wrote edgy darkfic for anime when I was in middle school and haven't tried writing since, but I have a few ideas so when I get a new laptop I may try and get back into that. My writing can't be worse than a lot of the purple prose out there.

I mostly read it for the smut and have only gotten back into reading story/romance driven ones recently. I forgot how fun it can be.

I mean, I think I manage to accomplish that in my own writing. At least I hope so. The settings I write in are somewhere between their source material and a porn set. Where every woman is just a little bisexual, and every guy can cum on command.

The only character I think I've "bashed" is Mary Jane, and that was more neglect than anything else. Although she did die. Hm.

At last, my tests are nearly done, and I can do that Gravity Falls one-shot I've wanted to do for a while now.

Which reminds me:

Totally original stories, as in, Batman stranded on Mars, instead of retelling the time Batman punched that one guy in the face lots of times.

Stories that smash the walls that keep a character bound to a certain setting, time period, or formula. In some cases, just the names are borrowed, everything else about the character is altered. Fanfiction takes on many forms, what I define as totally original are stories that don't build off of what's already been done.

>>79131242
I tend to lean toward DC Fanfiction, Star Wars, Power Rangers, DIsney Princesses, and from time to time I endulge my inner weaboo and read some anime based Fanfiction.

Nothing about sex though, sex scenes always read like the author is having cybersex with themselves.

Then again, for some of them cybersex might have been the only experience with sex they've ever had.. So.. Ick..

I will say that my stories are never based on "Oh, I think X and Y would make a great pairing!" It's more about how that particular setting and fictional elements would help initiate sex.

Like the symbiote bonding with Black Cat and feeding off of her "sexual energy," Supergirl finding herself, sexually, and struggling to find a mate that she wont pulverize, or Rogue exploring her sexuality through becoming a webcam girl since skin to skin contact is out of the question.

http://www.hentai-foundry.com/user/TheDjinn/profile I'm always looking for more feedback. I'm a whore that runs on attention.

I think it must be some kind of laziness? Or lack of imagination? It's easier to place the story in a familiar environment you frequent, and the high school dynamic with it's social customs if easy and familiar for most writers, I suppose. Whereas if you'd place the story in-universe or in a fantastic world, you'd have do more background work to make sure you have the details and customs right, or go through the trouble of making them up.

I write and read, but pretty much exclusively video-game related. I primarily do Fire Emblem-related stuff. Honestly, it's good practice. Started when I was fifteen, wrote MK/Avatar crossover. Too lazy to continue it, but came back four years later, started fresh. I'm not sure if it's ingenious or fucking lazy, but I read a Pokémon fanfic following Red deciding to climb down from Mt Silver and go through the new regions after beating the E4 again.

I wish there were more like that, or at least that it would update.

>A GF Pirate AU

Fucking why? You can do almost anything you want with the setting. Just have some magical crap happening in the woods, and there's the story, without any of this leap of setting bullshit.
>>
Fanfic is worthless garbage. It's masturbation, either intellectual (Mary Sue self-inserts) or physical (shipping, sex fantasies).

Not only is it shit, as others have noted it's lazy shit, just the same old AU settings, tropes, etc.

I really seriously think fanfiction stunts people and the culture in general. Instead of making new, ACTUALLY original stories you're just playing with the toys someone else made. It's just channeling people's natural creativity into these narrow little boxes.

If someone is capable of writing "good" fanfic, then write your own original damn stories and actually contribute to the world.
>>
>>79138374

My fanfic is devoid of self-inserts (hell, I think most writers are pretty paranoid of this happening) anything lewd, AUs, bashing, shipping, etc.

I write fanfic of my favourite shows because I LIKE DOING IT. You can say that original stories are good, and they are, but ultimately, I write because I like doing it, and when I'm writing about a show I already love, I love to write about it. My primary purpose in life is to have fun, so I'm doing that, not being ashamed of things I like.
>>
>>79138589
I write Simpsons fanfiction from time to time just to stick it to the writers and prove that Zombie Simpsons sucks so much that we could make better stuff than the crap they pull from their butts.
>>
>>79138589
Have you ever tried writing your own stuff?

Do what makes you happy, sure, but just think if the creators of your favorite show wasted their energies on fanfic and never made the show you love. The world would be poorer for it, right? Maybe you could bring something into the world that could inspire and move people like your favorite shows inspires and moves you.
>>
Sometimes I dabble, but it's only for 3edgy shit or if I crave a pairing that has no/complete shit fics for it. (Most m/m or het)
Otherwise I vastly prefer RPing. It feels a lot less like angrily jerking off in an empty room.
>>
I read and have written some fanfiction. I usually look for slash smut and I don't like reading pairings established in canon. Slow burns are good but I aldo like ones have sex throughout with the characters denying there feelings.

Like a lot have others have said it's really hard to find a good fanfiction and aldo can't stand the highschool AU and other tropes in fanfiction. As a slash fan I tend to avoid ones with seme/uke descriptions, since its usually a signal for bad yaoi tropes in the fic and I prefer switches.
Still even though I've stopped (I'm writing an original work right now so I can't divert my focus) I do get the urge to write more from time to time.
>>
>>79139014

Yes, when I was 14 I wrote a 150,000 word novel that I intended to make into a trilogy. Problem is that it took so long to make that the political values it espoused I'd 180'd on, and I kind of like to forget it happened. Never made the other two books.

Fan-fic is what got me back into writing, but I still do some poetry on the side.
>>
>>79138374

Calm down senpai. No one is writing fan fiction because they think it's some kind of intellectual medium.
It's either porn, which is always welcome, or it's an attempt to expand on characters/situations that don't happen in canon.
Which is especially awesome if the source material is meh-tier. One of my favorite series back in MS/HS was pretty bland and my favorite character got no screen-time. Fics actually developed the characters better than the original.

And why can't you do both? Most people who are serious about writing actually do more than just fan-work.

I used to write fanfic back in the day. Some of it was cringe-worthy self insert bullshit, but other stuff was slice of life/ day in the life of minor characters, esp minor villainous characters.

I actually do like reading fanfic too, but I'm so picky that I've given up on trying to read most of it. Characters acting ooc? Dropped. Terrible dialogue / grammar? Dropped. Hamfisted romance? Dropped. When it's good, it's really good. When its bad, it's just awful. And it doesn't even need to be said what the majority of fanfic is.

It's too bad though, because I really do miss it.

I don't suppose anybody has recommendations for a WiR fic where Felix is an evil control freak? I've been toying with that idea for a while and can't be assed to search through 50 pages of turbo wankery in search of a fic where he just doesn't play that big of a role, and it's just fixit that's a douche.

I write graphic rape fapfiction. Got a fairly large following on Ao3. My most popular fic has 500 kudos. My reviewers are super flattering and positive. People write stuff like they thought something was so well written it really stuck with them and made them emotional, or that I'm their favourite fapfic writer and they like reading my stuff before going to bed. Really nice comments that boost my confidence.

But the shame... The shame anons. I can't admit it to anyone. Not my friends who even read porn fanfiction. I feel like such a fraud or something, sitting and listening to them discussing fic and trying to write their own while pretending I don't do any of that stuff at all. I also feel slightly disgusted with myself. People have always said I write really well and I should write some stories, and then I go and make this sort of shit? It's something I'm going to take to my grave probably...
>>

>>
>>79140075

Self-Insert is pretty self-explanatory. You put a character into a story (or alter the personality of an existing character) to do or say exactly what you would do.

Technically, every character in all media has elements of self-insert, but in terms of Fanfiction, "self-insert" usually refers to a kind of obnoxious character who hogs the spotlight and makes it pander to the authors personal views or desires for the franchise.
>>
>>79139856

This is only technically related to fanfiction, but today I was faced with a dilemma, /co/.

More than a year ago I started writing a fanfiction, mostly as an exercise in discipline; I update every week, tuesday, between 3-5 pm, like clockwork. I've only ever missed an update because FF.net was down, and I have a good number of fans that follow my weekly updates.

Today it came time to post my weekly chapter, but I absolutely fucking hated the ending. I'd psted work I was unsatisfied with before, but usually in unimportant chapters: this one was a key moment for the narrative, and I hate that I couldn't get it right. I'd rewritten it a dozen times over but still wasn't happy, and I was out of time. I decided to post it anyway to keep up my regular schedule.

Did I do the right thing? Should I have chosen professional or artistic integrity?
>>
>>79141260
Oh, but I think I got into by reading really bad Naruto fic on ff.net.

I once read a Drake and Josh story where Megan stepped up her game and actually tried to kill Drake and Josh. Her first attempt was getting them in a car accident which they survived. The second I think is when she upright killed Drake. I forgot how(although I remember this one crazy scene when they tried to fight her off by kicking her in the breast and them commenting that's like kicking a man in the balls and that's what she gets). Anyways, It ended with Josh snapping and knocking Megan out than he ties her up in the attic and tortures her(beating her, threatening her with a loaded gun, drowning her, killing one of her friends right in front of her, hammering a nail in her ear), it ends with him hacking her the pieces with an Axe. The final scene is him leaving the attic where his parents come, Josh has already lost his sanity so he shots them and than the police instantly come knock the door down on top of him. When that happens Josh instantly regrets what he's done and shoots himself in the mouth.

And that's how it ended. Fucked up shit. Too bad it's deleted. Because I would link it.

one of the best fanfics I've ever read was a post-game Twilight Princess fic about Link travelling the world pining for Midna and Shadow Link getting revived.

Within it Link was willfully mute. There was a fantastic scene where, I think it was the barmaid, was watching Link interact with people, and the thought came into her head that maybe the reason Link never talks is because he already conveys so much through body language, that he doesn't talk because then he wouldn't have any secrets left, he'd express himself so openly people would be able to see right through him, and that scared him.

I've been trying to find that fic again for years as reference for writing my own mute character but I've never been able to track it down.

I'm thinking of having it be a mixed bag. Have the first chapter be the start of the origin story, then jump ahead to his first night out. have him develop a grudge against the first villain then jump back to the second part of the origin, then jump ahead to him making friends with the other local supers and making headway against the organized crime. Jump back to the part that ties the origin to his first night out then jump back ahead to him actually taking down the first villain. then the rest of the story moves linearly from there.

I'm someone who plans his shit out meticulously, but writing is still an organic process. If you plan on uploading shit as you go, do a few 'pilot chapters', sit on them for a week, then go back and review them. if you like 'em, do a few more and now you have a buffer. If you don't, go back to the drawing board.

If you plan on doing the whole thing and publishing the finished product, just write and don't sweat it. You may find yourself jumping all around the manuscript and that's fine so long as you still keep approaching that ending.

He dons some dark clothes and heads out at night. Years of police work make it fairly easy to get around on the city's roof tops. He steaks out in the bad part of town like that for few nights, until he overhears a few thugs talking about a meeting with 'the new boss' somewhere in the docks area sometime during the next weekend. He follows one of the thugs and approaches the guy in a bar. Now, Underhill is a pretty intimidating guy. 6'4, black, and built from his training, it wasn't hard for him to convince the gangster that he overheard he was with the gang and that he was looking to join in on the drug running business. The guy is a little bit skeptical, but tells him that there's going to be a sort of initiation/gladiatorial combat arena thing coming up at a warehouse down by the docks. The bosses way of showing new recruits exactly what was expected of them. Under hill shows up in gang colors to see exactly what he was dealing with. His plan was to call some of the cops he knew were trustworthy once he'd found out where the gang was meeting, but he didn't know exactly how big this thing was going to be and didn't want to send his friends into something that would get them killed. So he went into the warehouse just to see all who showed up. First villain makes an appearance as the gang boss, and when Underhill realizes he a super, sees that he's gotten in a little over his head. He tries to make his way out, but as chance would have it the gangster that had been sprung after the failed drug bust spots and recognizes him. He calls him on being a cop and Underhill is captured. They break his legs and leave him tied up in one of the gang's safe houses' basement. They decide to put him up for ransomed and he's left down there for three days. He manages to MacGyver his way free, knocks out the guard that was watching him, and uses the guards cellphone to call in his cop buddies on the safe house. Cont.

It's one of the biggest blows against the gang the police have manged in a long time, but Underhill's legs are jank, ending his career as an officer. over the next few weeks his life pretty much goes to shit. The gang knew his name and face, so he had to go into hiding for a while. He was staying with his sister who lived just outside town. First villain apparently held a stronger grudge than the thought, and sent one of his lieutenants to burn the house down. His sister died in the fire, and he was left with newly broken legs and nothing really left to live for. this made him a perfect candidate for a group called the New Salem Project. Back during WWII the German's had the Thule Society. This being a super hero setting they were actually somewhat successful and a legitimate threat to America. As such America had they're own group to study magic and implement it on the battle field. The New Salem Project was technically disbanded after the war, but enough higher ups were interested in their work that they still found the funding to keep doing their research, albeit in the shadows where know one could see what they were up to. They take people who are otherwise as good as dead and offer them a second chance as their magic guinea pig. Underhill accepts, as most do, and becomes the primary tester for the phantom cloak project, alongside Carl Sweiggen. He'll be important later. The cloak is a magical artifact that NSP found in some crypt. Supposedly it belonged to some legendary thief back in feudal times. The cloak allowed the thief to become intangible, invisible, and to float through objects. the biggest problem the NSP had was the the cloak was somehow attached to the soul of the thief. To anyone else it was just a white cloak. They placed some runic tattoos directly on Underhill's heart, that would trick the cloak into thinking he was the thief. They also fixed his legs while they were at it. Magic. Ain't gotta explain shit. cont.?

Its weird, fanfiction to me seems like its really hard to spot readers and authors. Nobody I know really discusses it online or off.

>I really seriously think fanfiction stunts people and the culture in general
Well, you're an idiot then. It's not really up to you to decide what sort of content creative people should be allowed to use, or what sort of stories or methods of publishing count as "real". Fanfiction gives joy to the people who write and read it, it's enough.

It's also an excellent way to get into writing.

Self-insert is a character who sort of represents you, or you identify with them, or write them as this wishful fantasy of how awesome it would be if these things were happening to you (and you were hotter and thinner and fit and popular and had an interesting name).

It's a little different from a Mary Sue (boringly perfect), but they often overlap into self-insert Mary Sues since if you're going to write yourself into the story under a different name, might as well make yourself awesome.

You should edit and rewrite it until it's cringe-free, not thrash it.

It's because it doesn't feel like proper writing since you're using other people's characters. If it was original characters everyone would openly be talking about their creative writing hobby

I think cherryviolets does a series of fanart based in a 1920/30s prohibition setting. I'm not sure how it would work as fiction but the art is great. it's like she binged Lackadaisy and GF at the same time and a whole lot of cool art came out of it.

>Totally original stories, as in, Batman stranded on Mars, instead of retelling the time Batman punched that one guy in the face lots of times.
Mah fucking nigga
Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who appreciates those kind of stories.

I think that fanfiction has a lot bigger potential than people give it credit for. If someone devotes himself to expand a universe he loves and puts some real thought into it, the story will end up being a really nice expansion to the established canon of said universe.
And while each of those kind of stories are noteworthy achievements, I think the real potential lies in stories that try not to be an expansion, but a new entry in that universe. I'm talking about original stories that are bound to the core elements of established universes.
Take digimon for example. Even though every digimon series(Adventure/02/Tri, Tamers, Frontier, Savers, Xros Wars) is different from each other, all of them share some core elements: a universe that contains digimon, digimon-human interaction (bonding, conflicts, etc.), digimon specific combat (evolution, joggress, etc.), a bigger than life threat, believable real world as a setting, an alternate world where the digimon come from, factions. If someone does decide to write something completely new digimon related, sticks to those core elements and brings something original and interesting to the table, then he has done something amazing.
This is the true potential of fan work and I think it's a real shame that most writers just stick to smutshit and don't even want to try to reach it, or at least make a good expansion.

Yeah, I've read that one too. Excellently done, and easily the best Link/Midna, but sadly discontinued. Can't for the life of me remember the title, but you can probably find it if you look on the loz fanfic recommendation page of tvtropes

>Do you write/read fanfiction /co/?

I've been writing two stories, but they're crossovers.

And they're crossovers involving a material that's temporarily banned from /co/...

And yes, I've posted them in /sug/. But when it comes to giving out questions/comments/criticism/suggestions, they're terrible.
>>

Yeah, r9k was extremely OOC but then again, it's Frac's self-insert fanfiction. Knowing that, it starts to make sense.

I think the thing about coffee shops is, a lot of these kids spend time in coffee shops. Which is why most AUs are coffee shops and/or high school - because they're based off of author experience.

It's not even about keeping it in their pants, other generals leak and shit/waifupost about as much, and the majority of the sperging is edgelords who can't bear the thought of something as cutesy as SU being popular in muh /co/ falseflagging and shitposting.

It's just mod bias and laziness. It moves too fast, they can't be arsed to monitor it, or something like that.

>>79150518
I don't think isolating the discussion into a separate site is good for the general level of mental health. It's good to have unrelated threads around people can check in between arguing about lore and waifus, it keeps things a bit grounded

>>
>>79150547
Advertise at /sug/ or even at r stevenuniverse , try to arrange a fic crit exchange, where you read and critique someone's stuff and they do the same to you.

Getting good feedback is hard though. From the normal readership audience, all the feedback tends to be ultraturbopositive due to the tumblr sjwish attitudes prevalent in the fanfic scene, stating that being anything but supportive is being an ableist hater or whatever.

Of course, considering that everyone writing tends to be an amateur which is obvious in the quality of the prose, it'd be awful for all the teenage wannabe authors if people would deal out actual critique, and sure it's great that people are encouraged to write and no-ones perfect when they're starting out or young etc. I get it.

But still, I feel the blind praise maybe sometimes keeps people from developing, because writing predicatable smut-fluff with jewel-toned orbs, burning cores and breaths they didn't know they were holding gets OMG THIS IS BETTER THAN PUBLISHED BOOKS YUO ARE A GODDESS tier rave reviews - so it's easy to stagnate and keep doing what you know, instead of trying something new and risk not getting your praise fix.

And also it can make people unwilling to listen to anything even remotely critical, even if there'd be a good reason for it.

(delete-edit since I effed up the spoilers like a retard)

>>

Yeah, that's probably why they're so prevalent. People write what they know.

I don't know why but High Shcool AUs just seem kind of meh to me. Especially the ones with vast crossover casts, like this trend of writing Elsanna high school MAU with the romance couples of all other Disney films also attending the same school, everyone very OOC.
I'm sure it could be done well (maybe), but still, it just feels so, I don't know. Tired.

ff.net for some reason only allows the one empty line. I think it's due to people abusing blank space in their fics in the past.

The only thing I've thought of is putting a small mark, like . at the start of the line, then changing the paragraph again, so you'd get

.

this kind of space, which you can continue if you need the room. Or sometimes I've centred the period, or something.

Yeah it sucks. If anyone has a better way I'd like to hear it, too.

The funny thing is I've gotten some feedback one one of 'em, they guy said he liked where it was going and that he'd keep an eye on it.

But he also mention that crossovers tend to have a smaller (which is understandable) reader-base because of the nature of crossovers themselves.

Noir AUs

crossovers of two franchises with the similiar themes, I'm tempted to do an Until Dawn/X-files fic at some point in the future
>>
>>79150924
>doesn't work
Really?

I've been able to make more space with putting 3 ball symbols, •••, in the line and then centering that, pic related. I was under the impression the same thing would work with the period, too.

What about if you'd use more than one mark, but still not a full line? Like :: or --- and center that?

I'd say post 'em. I mean with fanfiction the general quality is so all over the spectrum anyway you surely have nothing to be ashamed of.

One's a crossover between SU and Ratchet and Clank and the other's a crossover between SU and Kingdom Hearts featuring OCs because really hate writing dialogue for Sora, Donald, and Goofy.

Theres never one. There are millions, many of which have faded from memory. The perils of reading things made as a hobby, I suppose.
If I could ever get one fic updated, it would have to be Memory of a broken dimension. Fuck, that was my absolute favourite Pacific Rim fic and it stalled after four chapters, but those chapters are so good that I'm happy just to have that.
