Johnathon Schaech has joined the cast of The CW's LEGENDS OF TOMORROW as Jonah Hex, "a true legend of the Old West, a morally ambiguous gunslinger with a penchant for danger. Surprisingly, he knows a thing or two about time travel and the future, but is at home in the Wild West. Having battled outlaws and gangs for a while now, he advises Rip Hunter’s team of time travelers to be extra careful when they arrive in the small town of Salvation".

Hex will appear as a guest star on episode 11, with an option to recur to further episodes and a tentpole season 2.

This is why I fail to see the appeal of Jonah Hex. That's like, every single gunslinger character ever. Why would I read his book instead of just watching The Good The Bad and The Ugly?

You are a whiny bitch. You refuse to explain why you like this character when asked, and then start slinging insults at people when they call you out on it.

And my beef is with live action cape shows, not whatever bullshit narrative you've constructed in your rotting excuse for a brain.

Hah, his name looks like it sounds similar to "Jonah Hex" already.
>>
Fine, you want an explanation? The reason you can't just slap in The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, is because, where the hell else can you get a Cowboy, who, no matter wht situation he is in, be is the west, modern day, outer space, or the post apocalyptic wasteland,Hex is always there, trying g to survive, and do just a little right. He's tough as nails, competent, and has consistently been written good for ages now

Jonah Hex is nothing special.
>>
>>79132212
So, just because there'sa subgenre, means Jonah Hex is not worth it? That, I should just read one cape comic, because there is plenty like it? No, I read jonah hex, because, its fun, well written, and, well, I just like reading Hex. If you are this Steven universe loving guy, tell me, why do you like Steven Universe? You should be reading something that has actual value. If you read something for fun that matters worth a shit, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

>Still haven't said why you like Steven universe, have ya?
You still haven't explained why you assume that I watch Steven Universe. Seriously, where are you getting that from?
>>
>>79134402
I don't know what your definition of "value" is...

Jonah Hex does not meet that criteria.

>>
>>79135585
>Alright, how are c-listens filler?
They don't contribute anything besides being extra bodies for group shots. None of their stories are interesting and they have little reason to exist besides filling space and making it seem like people actually live in the setting.

Thus, filler.

>Would you call booster gold c-list, even when he had some aweso e stories written about him, that impacted the dcu?
Booster Gold is a B-lister, second tier. Though I dislike him because he's an annoying brodouche.

> not enjoying C-list characters for the freedom that comes with it
> not enjoying Booster Gold's antics with Ted and his development into the greatest hero you've never heard of

Booster is also debatable whether he's B or C list. A list is a household name. B list is somewhat more prominence in pop culture. Being a recurring character in Brave and the Bold isn't much of a push into mainstream

Also, there reason to exist is to tell stories, same as Superman or Batman. Just cause less people are reading them doesn't mean they can't be good. What does it matter if it doesn't effect the overall universe? If the story is good then who cares how "important" it is?

Telling stories with nobody characters is poor business sense. If you have a character who is well known, you can make more sales. C-listers are just not conducive to making money.
>>
>>79136561
Don't care bout money, care about stories
>>79136422
Its be true, but, with advances in prosthetic make up, and some of the cgi the cw can afford, can help bring tuftan and others to life
>>
>>79136561
Are you holding a share of DC stock? Who gives a shit if DC is willing to make good stories if it costs them a few? Do you want MORE Batman? If a C-list story does too poorly it'll get canceled, but if it does really well you have potential for creating a more popular hero
>>
>>79136703
>Don't care bout money, care about stories
If you care about good stories why are you reading comic books?

>>79136861
I want stories that feature characters who matter.

>>79136861
>potential for creating a more popular hero
>C-listers
>potential
This conversation makes me feel like I'm on acid.
>>
>>79136995
Because comic books are a medium, and can create good and bad stories
>>
>>79136703
Still, Kamandi is best case scenario. I won't expect him, even if it is possible.

Question might be fun if refit to having existed in the 30s with Sandman or something.
>>
>>79136995
Why do you read comics if you dont think stories are good? What do you mean matter? You would rather have a shitty story as long as it "mattered?" That mentality leads to events like Civil War. And yes, writing a good story can lead some C-lister to become more popular, like how good stories lead to adaptations and more mainstream popularity.
>>
>>79137072
Comic books do not produce good stories. The industry doesn't allow for it.

>>79137224
>Why do you read comics if you dont think stories are good?
Nothing better to do. It's not fun having a hobby you hate.

>What do you mean matter? You would rather have a shitty story as long as it "mattered?"
I mean it matters as in it features characters who are important in the overall setting. Not some nobodies who exist to fill group shots.
>>
Think Sgt Rock will show up? They better get someone real tough and gritty to play him if they do
>>
>>79137780
Who would you cast?
>>
>>79137566
Why even care if the story matters to the setting if you hate it? I mean if you read the stories they wint be nobodies. And just cause theyre c-list doesnt mean that they cant contribute to the setting at all
>>
>>79130927
>That's like, every single gunslinger character ever
Not in comics, there's a long history of "white hat" western heroes. Hex broke out of that mold.
>Why would I read his book instead of just watching The Good The Bad and The Ugly?
Because it's a consistently well made comic.
>>
>>79137994
>Why even care if the story matters to the setting if you hate it?
Because if I have to read this trash, it may as well be important trash.

>And just cause theyre c-list doesnt mean that they cant contribute to the setting at all
They already contribute. Someone has to be in the background of group shots. It's where they belong.

Long as we're talking about Hex, what I find very interesting about him is that yes, he can work perfectly as a rugged mysterious badass bounty hunter who rides into town and shoots the shit out of whoever needs to be shot. But at the same time, he has an intensely layered history as a character that stretches all the way to his birth and ends with his death. He's one of the few characters in mainstream comics to have an actual, recorded dates of birth and death, and between them, a ton of equally recorded significant dates and events. And all of that backstory, interesting to plunder as it may be, isn't really necessary reading to enjoy him as a character. It helps understand him, it gives him depth, but it's not an obstacle to his stories. And more importantly, it makes him feel extremely alive. While outwardly he sounds like a mythical Man With No Name or Django, what we have here is an intensely human character who lived and died just like any other man.
Apart from his stories and the quality of the writers and artists involved with him, what makes Jonah Hex interesting to me is that we're allowed to see him as both the legend and the man, neither clashing nor obstructing each other, both parts of a tremendously compelling character.

>>79137780
His helmet actually appears in a promo pic.

But they DO happen, usually on B or C list books where editorial is less likely to interfere and let the creators do what they want. Books like Jonah Hex.

Why not try reading a comic that's self contained and well made so you don't have to read shitty crossovers to keep up on what's going on?

He does have both, though. We've seen Jonah interact with all facets of the american West, from remnants of the Civil War, to slaves, native americans, lawmen, farmers, cowboys, inmigrants, inventors, men, women and children. We know how he feels about all of those, and not by his words (most Hex runs don't have him narrate his own stories, so we don't get to see his inner monologue or anything) but entirely by his actions. Same with his personality, and the best part is that we get to see how his backstory shaped that personality. How he's been soured again and again by trying to find a place of belonging and eventually settled for just drifting away. And it's not that the backstory makes him good; it's that it makes him human. I'd go as far as to say that Hex doesn't have a backstory so much as he has a history, with documented dates and several key events that allow us to trace his road from cradle to grave, which is something not many characters in mainstream comics have. It's a very humanizing part of his character, and the best part is that not only does this lead to intensely personal stories about who he his, where he comes from and where he'll end up, but it also lets us have smaller, self-contained stories about other people that Hex, much like The Man With No Name in For a Few Dollars More, just happens to wander into and lend a hand. It all adds up to a very unique and compelling character, at least for me.

The best modern Hex run is Jonah Hex Volume 2, by Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray. It's mostly one-off stories with two or three bigger arcs pepper throughout, all drawn by rotating artists with some seriously heavy hitters in there. Issues 13 to 15 have a retelling of his origin, too.
If you can stomach more old school stuff, pick up the two DC Showcase Jonah Hex volumes. They start out written by Joe Orlando, but a few issues later Michael Fleisher replaces him and starts giving Hex a fuckton more history and really fleshing him out as a character.
And if you'd like some more Weird Western flair and some seriously amazing art, check out Tim Truman's Jonah Hex: Shadows West.

Mostly just read his comics. The DC Showcase Enemy Ace volume in particular will give you the best idea of his character, mannerisms, speech patterns and general demeanour. Plus, it's a fucking awesome book. All dat Joe Kubert art, man...

Any good pics I can use as a reference point?

Now why do you think I just posted three full-body pics in a row, pal?
Overall, anything drawn by Joe Kubert should be good. If not, check out Russ Heath's rendition of him in Enemy Ace: War in Heaven, though he's wearing a different uniform there.

Thanks, man! That's a good one!

He heard about a Hex movie being in production and got a make-up artist friend of him to do a Mark of the Devil on his face so he could send it to the producers. It's what the left pic in the post you linked is. Then he read the script and ducked out, because he may be a fanboy but he's a smart one. He did get his wish of playing Hex a few years later, tho', in the Showcase Presents animated short.

>>79141775
Oh yeah, it's one of my all-time favorite pieces by Kubert.

....I don't know what I want. Okay? I just don't. I want to talk about stuff, but I can't just make a thread because I don't know what I want to talk about.

I don't actually hate comics, that's just some bullshit I made up because the only way I can ever get a "conversation" going is to act like an needlessly aggressive shithead. Every time I do make a thread it gets almost no replies and i never get to talk about anything. So really, it's either this shit or I don't get to talk about anything at all.

Honestly, I really don't give a shit that people like these live action shows. Whatever, do you. But acting all offended about them is the only way to talk to anyone. I guess that's pretty pathetic, but I've frequently tried to be the change I want to see, and it doesn't work. If you can't beat em, join em, right?

Whatever, the mods are probably about to ban me for spam again, and I really just don't care anymore. I just wanted to talk, but everyone's more interested in being a dick and spamming memes. That's just 4chan, I guess.

Oh, and seriously, my name isn't Alex. I have no idea where you're all getting that from.
>>
>>79139808
Again, why? He's adorable like a John Cena fan.
>>
>>79142104
Are you that guy from the secret santa threads?
>>
>>79142104
Alex is you are going to be an asshole to people who enjoy things just go to /lit/. I'd say go to /tv/ but not even you deserve that
>>
>>79142104

>>

Dawww, see look at him! He's so cute with his insecurities!. TOO CUTE. It's alright Alex, go take a poop and you'll feel better.
>>
>>79142317
What? No. I neve go to the secret santa threads. I always assume people are trying to send each other viruses or something.

>>79142345
I just wanted to talk about stuff. But that's difficult considering where we are. frankly, I'm tired of this shit. The fact I'm good at annoying people disgusts me.
>>

Like I said, I don't know. I guess I kinda like Hawkgirl. I got to know her through Johns' JSA run mostly. It's kinda neat that she's in this show. There's no way they can make the wings work though. Just, no.

... Oh right, I don't hate C-listers either. That was bullshit too.
>>
>>79142104
Well what are you reading?

>>

These are the most likely place to talk Hawkgirl til you shit it up. Idiot.
>>
>>79142770
I haven't read enough Booster Gold to have any sort of opinion on him.

>>79142729
Justice League. Darkseid War is not as interesting as I'd hoped it would be.
>>
>>79142880
Booster Gold is awesome. It's about a c-list hero acting like an idiot,as he saves the timeline all the time

Look man, I get where you're coming from. I'd love to be able to talk about The 'Nam or Ms. Tree or modern Judge Dredd too, and it's annoying when people would rather focus on other stuff, and even if you storytime it's still hard to get the audience you need (especially since they fucked up storytimes with the whole autosage thing...). But lashing out and trolling people isn't the answer. You're not getting them to talk about the things they like, you're not generating conversation, you're getting them riled up against you. You're lashing out and getting lashed back. And that's actually worse than not talking about it because all you do is sour yourself up, wrapping yourself into a spiral of hate and bile for others, for you, for the things you like, for everything. Until eventually all is shit, you included.
Now look, I can't give you a solution that'll work for you, but I can at least try to give you some suggestions. Step away for a while. Take a break. Get some perspective. Don't take things so deeply. Turn inwards. Talk less and think more about the things you enjoy. Analyse them. Look for other people out there who might enjoy them as much as you, and if you don't find them, try to cherish those things for the effect they have on yourself. I know it's hard, but it's better than going around like this.

>>79142700
Kendra is a pretty cool Hawkgirl, yeah. And I definitely agree about the wings. They just look so... cheap. I dunno, I think that feathered wings on human beings is one of those things that never fully works in live action unless you're doing camp.
>>
>>79142802
>You a fan of JSA?
Yeah. You know, since this show is about time travel, that's probably gonna happen at some point.
>>
>>79142880
We have threads on JL every new issue. The hell you complaining no one talks about your shit?

>>
>>79131812
So every thread you're going to come in going "Why do you like this shit?" even though people tell you and you don't agree with it? Sounds pathetic.
>>
>>79142104
We calling you Alex until you leave, and yeah make your own threads.
>>
>>79145298

It hit autosage pretty fast after the episode was over because of the previews for Suicide Squad and Justice League, and we've been too busy talking about those to discuss the show itself
