Not him, but:It actually being decent as opposed to what you'd usually expect out of a made-for-toys cartoon, it being made by Lauren Faust who'd already made a bit of a name for herself in animation circles, and a decent amount of the people in the first threads probably being femanons.
If you want to force it into what you're saying /co/ usually talks about, then it was the idea that there was the humor of the show along with the idea that there was some lore to it with how the story. Adding to that, the personalities of the characters, along with the variety of them, allowed them to be "waifu"able.
To interject further, though, I feel it should be pointed out that just because you can simplify it to a pattern doesn't really mean it's a bad thing.
Shows with children, or made for children, tend to be more innocent or have more thought put into them due to needing to captivate the children long enough and also due to the creator wanting to do more with their creation or also trying to make sure the adult watching isn't bored either., shows with lore are interesting presciently because of that, it makes the setting more real or interesting to delve in, creating something people are able to enjoy beyond a face value, and if people are able to have discussions about waifus then that's just mean that the creator has successfully created a character worth caring about or just simply they've succesfully created an appealing design.
