This comic was actually kind of a big deal to me, as it showed that Leo either had a bit of a sex-drive, or at the very least had a juvenile curiosity for females. Which adds weight to my theory that some sort of falling out had to have happened between him and Aeris when they were younger to have them cross each other off their lists of potential mates. The obvious appeal of the ship is just that Leo and Aeris are cute character designs and we've been following them for like 15 years since we were kids. Granted there haven't been a lot of comics made in that time but few things continue along for 15 years without explicitly ending.
Also they have a weird kind of implied dynamic that isn't shown through the comics. Leo is an insufferable retard and Aeris gives him shit, but the off-screen implication is that she always comes back to him and remains friends, so there has to be some tenderness to Aeris and redeeming quality to Leo.
