I take things slowly when it comes to media and am basically immune to good or bad hype. Catching up to things late lets you watch everything in a binge instead of waiting for episode by episode. Did all of Breaking Bad a year after release, watch Adventure Time a season at a time instead of weekly, etc.
And there's kind of a really weird jaded, cynical elitism fans have these days about things. Like I finally tried Dark Souls 1 in December. Loved it, beat it, got DS2 at the end of the Steam Sale, loved it, beat it. Looking forward to DS3 on release day with a bro.
But half the regular threads and vet players I see talk about it have colossal hate boners because they've beaten the game 10 times over and they can't unsee the flaws. And I'm just over here like "yay, what fun. can't wait for April." It's rare for me to hit something on opening day and even if I didn't plan to, no big deal. Too much work and life. A lot of 4chan seems alien to me now. I think the only reason I still come here is force of habit and the fact that every other message board/forum is even worse. Black People Twitter speak is everywhere, website wars, "Wow that meme was literally reddit: the post" and ironic shitposting in general, meme as an adjective, and the general shift away from discussion being the goal and towards shitposting and "funny" jokes being the goal. It's a poisonous mindset, and it hurts the actual discussions. Priorities are all messed up. People should go to an image board about [subject] to discuss [subject] instead of trading stupid jokes with a vague air of [subject] lingering in the distance. What's worse is that I find a lot of people will start a thread that's just pretending to be on-topic when in reality they just want to make jokes and trade memes/reaction images. The LP stuff I watched the most of was HellFire Comms, and it was with it's increased focus on streaming that I eventually ended up getting out of touch with the whole thing. Now, I don't absolutely love either. I appreciate and like both, but I recognize that they both, particularly steven universe, have their flaws, and certainly don't associate with the fanbase of either.
But far more than any sort of personal like of them, I just have to appreciate how impressive they are. How much heart and soul and passion and love for their mediums put into them. Ambition and skill in storytelling that's incredibly rare to see. I genuinely cannot fathom how someone could honestly not appreciate either as good.
