My suggestion on where you should start solely depends on your commitment to it. Starting at 252 is the easiest. Starting from the beginning is a long painful, but more rewarding journey. The most recommended way to get into it that I've seen is to read from the beginning til you get tired of it, then skip to 160.
If you do decide to check out the pre-reboot stuff, the best advice I can give is don't get too attached like I did.

The lawsuit happened in part because one game (Sonic Chronicles) was heavily inspired by comics from a previous writter (several characters were equivalents), and that writter claimed to have the rights of the characters he created.
That was as far as comic characters ever made into the games, and now it seems less likely to happen.

Those characters from Sonic the Fighters were made for that game, but haven't appeared in any game since, but did so in the comics and a lot, so it's easy to associate them with the comics more.
