I think it's an interesting concept. Some of the gems are starting to integrate themselves with technology, despite not actually having bodies. If Steven Universe had more of a sci-fi angle to it, you could do all sorts of neat things with that concept, like having their race eventually evolve into fully mechanical people with the gem at their core as a way to compensate for how easy their bodies are to break.
But I doubt the show will do anything with it.

I just don't like the direction the show has gone ever since the season one finale. Yeah pre season one wasn't amazing or anything like that but there were some bits and pieces I really enjoyed a lot.
The characters now feel a bit too one note nowadays, the story is all over the god damn place, Perdiot is a fucking joke and it's sad because she was one of my favorite characters, and the list goes on.
I contribute the downfall of Steven Universe, at least to me, somewhere in the beginning of the Sardoynx arc. The series rapidly changed for the worse.
It wasn't about a boy who looked up to his heroes and strives to be just like them one day anymore. Now it's gay melodrama and that just sucks.
