Hellboy is popular because it has two movies. Most readers of American comics (/co/ included) have no interest in comics without a connection to television shows or movies.
And even then it's only "popular". The last issue of Saga sold 51k, the last issue of Hellboy sold 12k. The last Saga TPB sold 44k, the last Hellboy TPB sold 3k.

As for Hellboy, I've never seen it particularly latched upon by the female demographic in the way Saga has been. Saga's 'notoriety' in this regard also is simply because a lot of newer comic readers are female.
Saga is "my first non-cape comic" to a T so that explains why it's so popular, it's entry level and not immediately awful. Just like Attack on Titan or Walking Dead, one sees this all the time.
Hellboy's got a loyal fan base because it's built to treat fans well. A tight, shared universe with timeline-hopping story potential and rigid continuity, as well as big name artistic contributors and an excellent strategy regarding collected editions.
Two different things, nothing related to genders having inherently different preferences or some bullshit.
