The guy has gone through a lot of shit by that point. This is him going back in time to try to prevent his family's death but he realized that the time machine he was lent didn't allow him to interfere so he became the almost invisible ghost from earlier issues that his family would see every once in a while.
Vartox in his original state. I love the idea of an older, wiser, and more powerful superhero that Superman looks up to.
