I still don't see what was necessarily wrong with Clark in this. He really wasn't that much of a dudebro douche. For example you use the heat vision attack in the second book. In that instance Clark used his heat vision after that person put a slug in his head ans genuinely made him bleed. He was hurt and scared and as in most things his heat vision can be activated by intense emotions. He was scared and acted how he could as a kid. Afterwards he showed extreme regret about his actions. What he did there was some edgy power fantasy but the actions of a scared did defending himself.
For me what makes him great is not the ideal he represents but the person he is. Someone who chooses to help not because he has to or because of some vendetta but because he is able to and he thinks it is the right thing to do. He's an idealist in a world of cynics. To me turning into an unmoving ideal cheapens the character. But hey that's what having different iterations of characters is for.
