Sephiroth could be the latest attempt using magic instead of science. He has the augmented strength, speed, reaction, etc going on but not to JLA levels. He is one of those superninja street level types like Spider-Man or Deathstroke. Plus materia gives him lots of magic potential to stay in a fight with higher power individuals.
He is also part alien virus eldritch abomination thing that gives him crazy regenration, immortality, some weird mutant shape shifting.
With that I sort of want to put him on the level of like Mr Sinister. When facing street levelers or X-Men he is tough but half the Avengers could solo him. His lack of durability really hurts him when facing bigger hitters. A plain old sword to the gut does him in.
