My sister has basic knowledge of characters and history/continuity. She mainly reads DC teen titles like Teen Titans & Young Justice. She's hunting for preNu52 series of Young Justice. Marvel side she's a Deadpool reader. She doesn't follow particular writers, mainly just characters. She realizes that some writers are shit, but admits that she'll recognize when something is shit and stop purchasing it at that point, so that's reassuring. Outside the big two, she'll read the odd title here and there, but ultimately she's into young capes.she's also always on her fucking phone reading Marvel/DC fanfiction the crosses over with Harry Potter and Naruto

If it's someone in real life I tend to quietly rage in my head about it and try to not overreact much when I witness it. A couple of young women I dated back in college read comics. One was into Claremont-era X-Men, another was into Gaiman's Sandman and manga (she was into Oh My Goddess! if I recall). So they're out there.
My niece reads a lot of the OGNs and serial TPBs published by Scholastic (Jeff Smith's Bone, Raina Telgemeier's Smile and Drama, etc.). They're apparently popular at her school's library.
I also have a female cousin who was a huge X-Men comics fan. When we were kids, she used to buy two copies of every issue of Uncanny X-Men (one for herself, a second copy for me and my older brother... she was real sweet). She doesn't read the X-titles anymore, though. I think these days she's mostly into Image Comics titles and reprints of Silver Age/Bronze Age-era Wonder Woman.

I made my ex read I Kill Giants, Birthright, For All Seasons, Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane and A Contract with God. the first few issues of the Wicked + Divine, and that Gillen Loki arc. She hates them all but supposedly read them. I don't reallly believe her because it used to take her like a real long time to read through her shitty YA novels she loved but she sped through these stories. Femanon here and I used to a lot. I got real into comics around 2000 when I first read Ghost World and started buying a bunch of capeshit as well as the usual required reading (Maus, Watchmen, JTHM). I sort of fell off after getting real into Scott Pilgrim at the expense of everything else. I used to work with a young woman who was actually decently knowledgeable about late '70s to present Marvel. My brother's ex was starting to read some older DC stuff she had access to, and getting clarification from me on cameos or random pop-up tidbits that she didn't quite know the source of. And, I had an ex who actually had a decent collection of random '80s/'90s fantasy-esque comics and some Nocenti and Chichester Daredevil.
It happens periodically, but a lot of them don't really advertise if they're into comics beyond watching film/TV adaptations. They're not unheard of, but most people don't really go on about interests unless they know you have some kind of background in it.

I know it isn't as as much as the height of the manga boom / bubble, but pretty sure manga imports are still outselling domestic product.
I remember around 2008 or so Wired had an article on manga sales. Plus Publisher's Weekly and some other articles I saw.
That is how fucked and up its own ass the US comics industry is. Imports from Japan, a secondary market for them, are outselling our domestic product.

Its a better deal. A single volume gets you multiple issues, only for $10. American trades are expensive as fuck, and mostly just filler. Or you buy the single issues at an outrageous price for 20 pages, then you got to wait a month, or in cases like Image, it can be 4 to 6 months.

They were like 70-75% of the market at turn of the century and still over 60%. And they made that majority of the market into an artificially inflated shitfest that seems like something out of the Bear Sterns playbook that was part of what crashed the entire economy in 200i.
