Well, the whole issue here was banking on subverting her usual activities. Every time there was about to be action it was all quickly countered and played down, mostly for comedy. It's not a really bad direction to go for a first issue, but as you said, uninspired. Maybe it'll get better with more length as the story arc finishes, but I doubt it.

And even the comic character is still set in Howard's universe, it still uses Howard's creations.

That's a stupid argument, that's like saying Stoker's Dracula doesn't matter because his portrayals in movies are that much more famous.

But that's not what's being said. Dracula was a fully realized character, so you usually trace all other interpretations back to the original. Just like with Conan, there can be several interpretations, but no matter what, REH's stuff will always be the "true" Conan. Sonja doesn't have that going for her. All she has is an offhand mention in one story, with everything "iconic" about her coming after the fact. Even Valeria had more going for her in the one story she appeared in, and honestly, I don't know why she was never used more, since she was basically Blond Red Sonja.
