Penny's family is normal enough, she seems to have had a normal enough upbringing. Of course she had a pet tarantula, and only weirdos have pets like that.
I'm more worried about Anais. I think it's a bit easier to become "smart" than it is to learn social graces. I mean to become smarter you just read. Might take a while to get your brain to a state where it can easily absorb info, but it really just comes down to reading and practicing.
